membership to a association

Hi Every-one

I need a bit of advice please regarding taking out insurance. I qualified 2066 as a reflexologist from Raworth International. I now need insurance to start working. Is it really beneficial to be a member of a Association and can I take out Insurance without being a member?
Any advice will be appreciated.

Hi Tottie,

You definitely don't need to be a member of an assocviation just to get insurance - although you can get cheaper insurance this way, but you still have to pay a membership fee which normally means you still end up paying the same as everyone else anyway!

I haven't joined an association as they just seem to me to try and get you to fork out more money for nothing - There was a thread recently about the FHT where people stated that to use their logo they chrage £9!! surely as a member you shouldn't be expected to pay out more money?!
Sadly this often isn't the case, so I personally cannot see what additional value you get for being a member, as although you can have letters after your name, most members of the public know nothing about these organisations so i don't see how it makes a difference.

There are plenty of insurance comps out there that will insure you without becoming a member of an association - just google professsional indemnity insurance for therapists and i'm sure plenty will come up!

Hi there, try professional beauty direct. They cover reflexologists for everything you would need and they only charge something like £49 per year, this is really all you need. I am insured with them and have been for the past 5 years.

You're welcome! I know what you mean some of the fees are treble this amount and you will be getting the same cover in the end. Why give insurnace companies you hard earned cash?

Hi ya

Of course a therapist doesn't have to belong to an association. But there as many advantages:

1. Legal and professional help
2. Practitioner registers, paper and internet (not that I get many from that)
3. A magazine (which some are crap and some are good)
4. Special offers
5. The public like to think you are a member of an association with a proper code of conduct (whether its bull...... or not)
6. Continued professional development
7. Looking after your interests on various goverment bodies involved in regulation
8. Sometimes more comprehensive insurance policies, not just indemity

And many other things I can't think of for the moment.

It's nice to have a sense of independance, but complementary health needs a united front. There is still mountains of negative propaganda thrown at comp. health*. If you wish to be a member of an association, shop around and ask questions like you would buying any other service. Some are very good and some are making money by jumping on the latest band wagon.
