First off, I'd like to say that I do not possess any licenses in massage therapy, unlike many of the people on this forum. I have no clinic and I have no real experience, yet I have an important question. I understand that one needs to have license to charge strangers for giving them a massages. Now, hypothetically speaking, is it possible to not have any license whatsoever and give strangers massages (but to tell the strangers to tip you however much they'd like)??????? Please educate me

It is my opinion that the first thing you would want to do is learn how to correctly spell the type of work for the profession you are interested in becoming a part of.

• I am not a Message Therapist and I don't do Messaging.
• I am however, a Massage Therapist and I do provide Massage Therapy services.

Second, because there are so many laws, rules and regulations regarding massage therapy, you would want ask your city, state or country if they allow for you to practice unlicensed (call or write the appropriate boards for where you live). In the states, you can contact your "State Massage Therapy Licensing Board".

Third, when you provide unskilled sessions, you have the potential for harming your clients. There is a reason why you should receive training as is applicable per your city, state, country.


Last, you would probably want to re-post this question in the Clients & Hobbyists Talk About Massage. You would be considered a Hobbyist.

You are asking whether it is possible to engage in criminal behavior. Sure, it's possible to become a criminal, though I recommend against it. Why don't you find a legal source of income instead?

Thanks for both comments. Also, it's very saddening that a collage (Although the terminology is different and might get you past the court with a good lawyer, for all intents and purposes you would basically have a sliding fee (aka tip or donation) scale set up.

Even if it was legal, it's extremely unethical because you are still asking for monetary exchange for a service for which you're not licensed to do even though it's not called a "fee". Although the terminology is different and might get you past the court with a good lawyer, for all intents and purposes you would basically have a sliding fee (aka tip or donation) scale set up.
