Metal Plates in Head/Face

Hi There,

Some advise please.... I am learning Indian Head Massage. My neighbour would like me to practise on him. However, over 10years ago he had a major car accident & has had over half of his skull and face rebuilt with metal plates. He also has paralysis on one side of his face.
Can I treat him? I don't see that it would be detrimental for him but am
not sure that it would actually benefit him at all?
Could I have your thoughts please?

I would get him to get a letter from his doctor - I personally wouldn't have a problem, it is an old injury, but you need to check he hasn't suffered any seizures, that he hasn't told you about.

One of the ladies in my group years ago did a case study who had lost his sense on taste after a car accident, but seem to regain it for a while, after a treatment.

Ask him where the metal pins/plate are located (roughly) so that you can be aware of them while working. Sometimes, they can protrude a little and can be felt through the skin so you may need to be gentler around those areas - just get feedback from him on this. It is a very old injury and I doubt the doctor will provide a letter - they very rarely do for a current condition so the chances are pretty slim for sometthing that happened 10 years ago. I agree with bluefloppy on asking about the accident and whether he suffered fits at all as a result. Also, in the areas of paralysis perhaps be aware of the pressure you are using and again get feedback from your client. Is the area totally paralysed or does he just experience a level of numbness? He will benefit from the relaxation aspect of the treatment but it will also increase the circulation in the area which is a good thing. I would happily treat this person. Thank you for your responses, it is much appreciated. He has never experienced any fits so that is a good thing. I can feel the plates & the skull damage but he cannot really feel much in those areas. The face has movement but no feeling at all on one side. I had a practise & he found this relaxing & comforting & has asked for me to treat him again, so all is good! Thanks once again! xxx
