Nerve endings in hands???

Hi everyone!

I'm hoping someone has the answer to a burning question!

I have put together a talk on reflexology, and have included the point about there being 7000 nerve endings in each foot. This is quoted all over the place, and sounds very impressive!

However, it has just occurred to me that I have no context to this! The hands can be used for reflexology - how many nerve endings are in the hands? Are there less than 7000? (I know there is a high densuty of nerve endings in the fingertips, so wonder if there are more than 7000 in each hand?)

I've searched for some time on Google, and can't find the answer! Please help!!

I've been googling this as it seems a really simple question to answer and also a very interesting one.

Thanks for your reply. It sounds a straightforward question doesn't it! But not an easy answer to find! Luckily, nobody thought to question this at the talk. To be honest, it's the first time the question has occurred to me, but now I've posed it, it seems important to know the answer! I hope someone comes up with an answer, otherwise I'll probably lose a few more hours googling...
