TRAVERSE CITY — David Burke just moved to Traverse City for both family and business.
His son, a dentist, graduated from high school in Traverse City and currently lives on the West Coast but plans to join a dental practice in Traverse City in June.
And Burke wanted to create business synergy by combining his pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) pain-relief services with a complementary massage business. He and his business partner on April 26 launched Kaya’s Massage at 508 West 14th Street in Hickory Corners shopping center.
Kaya is the professional name used by Baorong Mitchell, who co-owns the new business. Mitchell worked as a nurse in her homeland of China, but met Burke after she moved in 2005 to St. Louis, Michigan, just down the road from where Burke then lived in Shepherd. Both towns are south of Mount Pleasant.
Mitchell moved to Traverse City last month after working as a massage therapist for two years in Spokane, Washington.
After owning a series of four gyms in the Mount Pleasant area, coaching various sports teams and working as a sales rep for the company that manufactures a PEMF device, Burke transitioned to offering pain-relief services with the machine. He worked in various host locations and discovered that working in a massage business offered the best possible placement.
“When I was at the massage places, it was a total fit,” he said.
So when Burke decided to move to Traverse City, he contacted Mitchell — then in Spokane — with the idea of a shared office here. The concept was an easy sell — Mitchell said she had visited Traverse City, and liked the town’s waterfront, wine and cherries.
“We talked about the combination of our work,” Burke said. “We felt our services would be perfect together and no one was doing that combination.”
Mitchell said clients who use the PEMF therapy immediately before getting a massage allow her to more easily manipulate the muscle tissue.
“With the massage, then I can go deeper,” she said.
Mitchell has been practicing massage therapy for nine years, ever since she moved to the U.S.
The freshly remodeled space in Hickory Corners also includes a tanning bed and a sauna cocoon device that vibrates and rolls aromatherapy into the mix. The business is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
