I think I posted this in the wrong place so am putting it here and dont know how to delete the other one
I have posted this query in the Reflexology forum but had no response so thought I would pose a similar question here. I have a new client for Reflexology with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome we have her G.Ps permission for treatment, I had never heard of the condition until being contacted by her, I have since heard of another in my locality. My query is has anyone treated this condition with any therapy and especially Reflexology if so what were the results. Hope someone can shed some light.

Sorry - can't help! Had a friend at school with hypermobile joints - she could do back bends and push her fingers into all sorts of unexpected positions, but never realised it could be a problem .

Have you spoken to the client about the condition? I knew someone with this a few years ago, and he was very prone to bruising, and also had arthritic joints - he was only 32 but felt much older. He was also warned that he may be prone to heart disease! There are number of variables to the condition, but it would be best to talk to the client to see how it affects them, and then gauge the treatment accordingly - you may need to modify your pressure if the skin is sensitive.

Yes we have discussed the condition and she has many problems, arthritic joints being one. She cannot stand her back being touched at all but is ok with medium pressure on the feet, there has been no bruising to date. I understand that vascular EDS may cause heart problems and rupture to major vessels but she does not have this form of the condition. It is nice to know someone has come across the condition before as I had never even heard of it. I had to do some research. Thanks for your reply's.

It's to do with the collagen in the body not reacting as it should, and therefore could affect any part of the body. For example, joints could slip out of place easily or not go in the right direction. Your client is the best person to advise how it affects her.

My best friend has Ehlers-Danloss, and ive treated her since before I qualified in Reflexology.

You have to treat each session with your client differently - depending on how they are feeling etc. We noticed that sometimes she could cope with longer treatments.

My friend was very late in being diagnosed with this - she used to be a gymnast, but her ligaments etc became very loose and she had several injuries through it. She now has a straightened leg.

So, depending on how far along they are with the condition (it worsens with age...) and where it is affecting them, you will have to tailor the treatment accordingly.
