ALBION — Stressed? Anxious? Depressed? In pain?
Perhaps a massage is in order.
Karen McAllister, licensed massage therapist, opened a new massage therapy clinic in Suite 135 of the Arnold Gregory Complex in Albion.
“October is Massage Therapist Awareness Month, so instead of waiting until November — which would have probably been a bit better to give me more time to get things done — I wanted to during this month,” she said.
McAllister got into massage therapy after suffering in pain following a car accident, going through three years of physical therapy without benefit. At the end of that painful effort, her husband gave her a gift card for a package at Celebrity Day Spa which included a 15-minute chair massage. McAllister said she walked out pain-free for the first time.
Afterward, she found a massage therapist in Albion and started training with her and getting progressively better. She eventually went to New York Institute of Massage for a year, and passed her board exam the first time.
“Massage increases blood flow throughout the body, even if you aren’t working on that part. It just increases blood circulation, so it helps the body heal itself,” she explained when asked how massage helps. “It increases lymph flow, which cleans out all the lymph glands. It helps in so many ways.”
McAllister first practiced out of Paradise Healing Arts. After the owner decided she wanted to change the emphasis of the building, McAllister started looking for new space before finding a location in the Arnold Gregory Complex.
While McAllister’s official opening was on Tuesday, she had moved into the space at the end of September.
Hours are 2 to 5 p.m. on Mondays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursdays and 2-6 p.m. on Fridays, by appointment only. She also does some home care.
