WICHITA, Kansas – The local massage industry is partnering with the city of Wichita to help fight human trafficking. Tuesday, police will present a brand new ordinance to the city council aimed at regulating the industry locally. Kansas is one of five states that does not regulate the massage industry. A good deal of those proposed changes came from concerns about illegal activity prompted by individuals in the industry.
“Some of these massage businesses that the complaints originated from were involved in activities that would be associated with human trafficking or illegal sex trade within those businesses,” said Deputy Chief Hassan Ramzah with the Wichita Police Department.
Police note they’ve seen an increase in the past year in their investigations and arrests for human trafficking, some of those cases are directly tied to massage businesses. In 2014, there were 14 investigations which lead to 11 arrests, in 2015, those numbers went up to 24 investigations and 22 arrests.
“The crime of human trafficking can be pervasive in certain communities,” said Ramzah, “and its good to have tools in place to kind of combat some of these types of crimes.”
