Could someone briefly explain to me what linux is? I hear it's an operating system but some say it's a kernel -- though I don't know what the latter means.

What are the most common reasons for why people use Linux as opposed to the more popular Windows or Mac OS.

Is it true that it's offered for free. If so -- how is that possible?
 
It's an OS and people use it because it's free and is not very susceptible to any kinds of virus's (idk how to pluralize virus) also it's possible to be offered for free because it is supported by the community and anyone can make changes to it not a large corporation like Microsoft or Apple. On top of being free and very virus proof it's open source which means you're free to make changes to it as you please no need to wait for updates from a company if you're skilled enough just make it yourself.
