Newbie to drums, what to do?

I want to start playing drums, so I need to buy a drum set. Most of the music I want to learn is going to be rock/alternative. Here are a few questions I have.

1) What brands do you recommend for the drums and cymbals?
2) What should I have in my drum set (How many toms, what kind of toms, how many cymbals, what kind of cymbals, etc.)
3) I know my drums will get dusty. How do I clean it, and are their cases or something I use to cover my set for transportation?

I would appreciate if you would answer this, I don't want to waste money on stuff I don't need or be missing things in my set. Thanks

I suggest you go to a music store and speak with the drum sale guy. He's usually a pretty good drummer, so if you can't play yet, he can demo them for you. I bought some Roland TD4s, and I use them to trigger Addictive Drums, which is a drum sample software...if you want an acoustic set, you really need to sit down and play them, or have somebody play them. Yamaha, Pearl, Tama, Ludwig, are all good brands, but it depends on what you're looking for.
