Newbie trying to share files on a home network?

Hi Folks,

I would like to share files between two computers but am very new to this although not new to computers.My set up at the moment is this:

One pc in living room that is wired direct to the dsl netgear modem/router

One pc in bedroom one floor up that connects to router via netgear wireless dongle.

Have made sure the workgroups names are the same (Named them the same as the SSID of the router) but one in bedroom runs XP and living room one runs Windows 7.

no matter what i do i cannot see the other computers come up on my network!Is it a case of both need to be wireless or am i missing something?

Any help would be very gratefully received
Forgot to add both computers are connecting to the internet fine,its just the file sharing that is driving me mad!
