Not sure where to put this - but water fountains...?

Do you use any additives to the water to prevent algae build-up and limescale? Mine are running 24/7 and I'm having to clean them a lot more often than I'd like. I only use filtered water in them, would distilled be better?

Any tips or tricks?

I have heard distilled water works better, but why do you leave it running 24/7? Is there a way you could put a small filter in it? I have a water fountain for my cat (she loves to drink moving water and always spilled her dish previously) and it has a small charcoal filter that is replaceable. By small i mean 2in wide by 3 or 4 in tall. Can buy the replacement filters at wal-mart.

I haven't found anything yet on the market that really helps with lime scale. Using distilled water is best for keeping mineral buildup at bay. No matter what kind of water you use, you will need to clean the fountain out at least every two to three weeks just because the water attracts dust and stuff.

Your fountain motor will last longer and stay quieter if you turn off the fountain while not in the room or office.

umm. I've never done this, but it's a thought. I don't have a fountain, but I have very hard water and often have to clean it.

How about once a week doing an ALL VINEGAR fountain for a few hours. Buy the cheap white vinegar, about $1 for a gallon, and put a few (or whatever needed) in the fountain. Let it run over night or something.

I think that might help? Lemon juice is another possibility.
