Online massage directories
I'm listed in the Open Directory that I mention in that earlier thread (you need a web page to be able to be listed in the Open Directory), plus a few free directories (ones I've filled my details in and a lot of others that just take the Open Directory listing) and two paid for directories (I thought I'd try the paid ones for a year).
I think every result I have had from the web has been a search - no-one has found me in either of the 2 paid directories, though my page in one directory has been viewed 30 times since May in the one that tracks things like that. whoop dee do - 30 times in 5 months! And I don't think the little free directories have had much impact either.
My web site, which I would say is mostly found by people searching, and I'd say most of those are through google, is averaging 20 hits per day over the last 3 months. ย I'd say I get a phone call/email from someone new that is not a referral every 2 or 3 days, which means they are from the web (I don't advertise anywhere else at all, no brochures, mail outs, magnets, paid ads, street froneforum.xxxe, nothing - it's all web and word of mouth).
So my experience is good search engine ranking out performs paid directories. ย I think the public usually tries a normal all purpose seach engine like google before they try a more specialised directory.
You need to get in some free directories with a link to your web page to bump up your number of "linked to's" so the search engines think you are an important site. ย The Open Directory, http://www.dmoz.org , is the best free directory to get into, but it takes time.
If you really really can't get your own web page (I don't even have my own domain, I use my web space that comes with my ISP subscription!) if you can customise a page in a directory listing enough, you could always submit that directory page to http://www.dmoz.org
