I feel sure there must be a discussion on this already, but could not find it? Am looking for a thorough discussion of why to or not to use cortisone injections in general, and then for Morton's neuroma in particular.
I know that, depending on the problem, cortisone masks the dysfunction rather than relieving it. But I'd like to know about any other reputed risks of small amounts of cortisone to a localized area. I have a new client with Morton's neuroma who has heard that cortisone injections will take away the pain. In the quick internet research i've done it appears that for some people it truly does take away the pain for, say, years--for others it may only last days or months. I haven't worked on the area yet, and doing searches on massage protocols for Morton's neuroma hasn't brought up anything--on the other hand, it seems possible that one--me or another MT--could create enough space to fully relieve the neuroma. My client also has also not yet tried some other things, like no high-heels! but says she has tried foot pads and orthotics. I assume that if she gets the cortisone the bones will continue to wear on the nerve but without her knowledge. What are the risks of this if any, and what about the other reputed negatives about cortisone--are they true of these very small localized injections? (I just realized I don't know how long she's had it (oops!!), but say for now that she's had it a year.)
Thank you so much!
