They probably werent so worried that they would loose a couple hundred thousand votes by not responding, but figured what an easy cost effective way to pick up some fence sitters, the tech savy students and low income people. Besides doesnt cost a single cent in tv ad time, look at the press we get for free being white knights.

Now if only they could do something about the rogers/bell caps.
Of course maybe they did the fringe players may be more desirable now, so maybe the big players will have to ease up a bit to not loose market share.
