Pallative Care

Hi, just wondered if anyone knew of any courses you can do in Pallative Care.

Also i'd be interested to hear more about PC from anyone that has experience in this area. My local hospice is always looking for volunteers but they ask for experience of working in PC - I wondered if specific training would be enough.

My husband is concerned that I would find it gets me down but i've heard that hospices can be wonderful places to work.

Hi,

Why don't you give the hospice and call and see what sort of experience they are looking for. Our local hospice is also always looking for volunteers but no experience is necessary as you can start of by just being there, having a cup of tea and a chat to the patients, their family or even carers.

For therapist they are looking for people with some experience but this needn't be in PC.

Our hospice offers the services of a coucillor for all volunteers to talk to on a regular (montly mostly) basis, but they are also available at other times if volunteers feel they need to talk to somebody. It does become a bit difficult when you get to know patients and their families and the inevitable happens. However, I see the hospice as a place full of care and love and a very good environment to be in.

As mentioned above, give them a call and have a chat and see where it goes from there.

There is the National Association of Complementary Therapists in Hospice and Palliative Care - they run workshops and have regional groups. The aim of the association is to support members by offering a national network, a professional association, advice and practical support, education and research. It was formed in 2001 and has regional groups. Which area do you live in and I will then let you know the number I have for that area.
The info I have is a few years old, having said that they will be able to point you in the direction of the right person.
