passport requirement- triggering changes?

I think some agent has a wild imagination.

I guess someone could have entered Mexico on foot, and then traveled to a destination where they could fly back, but basically the passport would have been needed on the front end of a "round-trip" anyway. I don't think too many folks are flying back without a passport.

It's not the airports. Its the Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) at the airport.

What the CBP officer said was the CBP is issuing a $300.00 fine to air travelers who re-enter the US without proper ID, such as a passport. (Note: Passcards are only valid for land travel.)

He went on to say that currently the Port of San Ysidro lacks the necessary hardware and software for the CBP to issue fines to land travelers re-entering the US at the Port of San Ysidro with non complaint ID similar to the fines that the CBP is now issuing at airports to air travelers who re-enter the US with non compliant ID.

I crossed early evening by car June 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. The crossing time by car was about 1/2 what it was the week before. So I suspect tourism is down overall, although things seemed normal in the ZN. (Of course, normal these days is much slower than in times past.)

So far customs is only giving a warning--sometimes in secondary--to those without a passport or passcard. One agent told me the CBP at the airports is charging a $300.00 fine, but at San Ysidro they currently can't charge fines because they lack the necessary hardware and software.

i forgot my passport the last few time i went, no problem. last time they didn't even ask 4 it, i showed my d.l. and that was that.

The border waits of course will be smaller.

Have not visited the Zona since Monday night....when it seemed the same as always.

Reports have been that the agents have not really been instructed on what to do with folks without passports and that people are still crossing without them.

has anyone noticed Is there a difference in the amount of visitors to the zona cause of the passport requirements? any longer waits at the border?
