hello, im falling in love with this forum!
I started an IFPA recognised course in aromatherapy although I left after 4 months because i felt the course was not the one for me. i am seeking another course although i have lost confidence has anyone else ever felt like that?

Also i completed an amazing weekend couse on Indian head massage although it was not accredited. I have no other therapies apart from reiki one and i dont possess an a anad p qualification or insuarance. Is it o.k to practice this therapy or not?

sorry i can't help with the aroma . I am surprised that your IHM wasn't accredited as a lot of people seem to do it in a weekend and get accredited but perhaps they have another therapy or separate A&P.
It is ok tp practise reiki 1 on friends and family but to charge people you usually need reiki 2 for most insurance companies.
As for your IHM if friends and family are happy for you to practice on them there shouldn't be a problem but if you are going to practise any therapy for money then i would definately recommend that you get insurance and for that you need to be accredited.

As Soar wisely says, I wouldn't practice for money on anyone until properly qualified.

I did an AoR taster course in Reflexology for 10 weeks and thoroughly knew how to give a treatment, but we hadn't covered A&P. I then did the full course with at least 60 hours of case studies and thorough studying of the wonderful human body with assignments on A&P and quickly realised how essential it was. We hardly touched the real tip of the mountain of knowledge needed on the short course. Not only that, it was extremely satisfying and I am really proud of my hard earned Diploma.

Don't sell yourself short. The 'dauntingly long' 10 months course flew by in the end. Once you have the A & P you understand the interactions and implications of symptoms and are a much better therapist.

I'm starting a course for IHM next weekend (over two weekends and personal study)and will have to do case studies and A&P again but will grit my teeth and bear it knowing I will be much more confident if I have a proper diploma.

Hello, and welcome! Sorry to hear that you didn't feel your IFPA course was for you. Why was that, can I ask? Some may prefer to go along the Reiki route only, I have a friend who prefers it to anything and that could be your case.

As for A&P, yes it is essential, especially for reflexology I think. The ITEC indian head courses are now much longer and a and p is a pre-requisite.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your thoughts. I love reiki, I completed reiki one three years ago and I feel it is now the right time to progress. With regards to the other therapies I have decided that I will wait and find the right course with recognised accreditation and a teacher I feel a rapport with. I understand IFPA is a very respected organisation although I personally did not feel supported enough on the course. The course fees were expesive, when I started the course I was earning a good salary as a teacher in a prison. I had some tricky experiences there and I had to leave my job as a result of sresss related illness. Because of this illness i felt that i could not undertake the huge commitment of a professional course. The college have stated that I still have to pay the full course fees. I have no money to pay them, I have found different employment now and am enjoying good health although I now work for a charity on a low income. I know the importance of commitments and I appreciate the college's predicament. I am still upset and confused by the whole situation. I think the college have now contacted a debt collector and so I will have to see what happens as I have never been in this position before. The corse fees were 1500 pounds and I paid 400, I studied with the college for three months. I know that private colleges operate differently from further education colleges and I am a qualified further eduacation lecturer-it just doesnt seem right. There were six people on the course and another girl left also. I feel bad, I hate confrontation and negativity of any kind. If I am meant to pay the money , then I will have to find a way somehow. I am also dissapointed that I wrote a letter to IFPA and I didnt even recieve a reply.

Cariad, I'm sorry to hear about your experience. I myself know what it's like to do a course on something you really like but feel that either the teacher or the structure of the course is wrong. I'm on my third attempt at reflexology for probably the same reason as you! My first course was very disappointing: badly organised, pushy stock-room person who would always make us finish at least half an hour early because she wanted all her stock back in place before 9 (on a 6-9pm course) because she wanted to go home!, and a teacher who hardly knew his A&P! This teacher also did something very strange which is not normally done in reflexology but I won't say what, just in case he reads it ! I finished the course but wasn't happy, so halfway through the exam at the end of the course, I walked out.

My second attempt was just as unpleasant, and although I was getting really cheesed off by then, I tried for a while but left half-way through the course. Although my courses were nowhere near as expensive as yours, I still felt cheated out of money that I could hardly afford.

I didn't give up though. I tried a third which, although not ideal, was somewhat better than the others, partly because the A&P was a requirement before the course, so I had to concentrate solely on my A&P course and pass it before I even started reflexology. Like Jan, I'm also of the opinion that you get much more out of the course if you know anatomy, and the fact that I didn't have it during the previous two courses added to the problem I had with them (although the teachers were the main reason).

I hope you can solve your problems. Why don't you go to a Citizens' Advice Bureau? I'm not saying they'll be able to help, but you never know, and the service is free.

Cariad, I was concerned when I read your last post. You don't need this put in the hands of a debt collector. I would suggest the best thing to do is go to your GP and get a letter saying that you were not well enough to finish the course, this should cover you.

They are obviously going to want to get their money back, but you should tackle it now before it gets more worrying for you as debts don't usually just go away. A visit to the Citizen's Advice would be a very good idea.

Thanks for your support, I have a letter from the doctor and I have spoken to the citizens advice.... I have given up worrying about it and I am not going to let it put me off future courses.
