CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- Chesapeake police along with federal investigators executed several search warrants Friday in the Great Bridge area.
Police spokesperson Officer Kelly O'Sullivan said the search warrants were executed in reference to the businesses receiving complaints involving not having proper permits, people residing at the locations and/or massaging erogenous areas.
Authorities asked for the assistance of Homeland Security Investigations approximately six months ago should the investigation grow into federal jurisdiction. The investigations have been on-going for approximately one year.
The investigation is part of a larger network and was sparked after at least six establishments may have violated a prostitution ordinance.
Adam Perry with the City of Chesapeake Planning Commission said about a year ago they started hearing complaints from people in the community about these businesses. Some complained about people living at the locations.
"It was a free for all you know they were open until all hours of the morning," said Perry.
Perry said citizen's complaints helped council establish a new set of laws to combat illegal practices at these businesses. Specifically, to crack down on prostitution and sex trafficking.
"We decided to bring forward some regulations from the planning commission from a zoning perspective to give the counsel some tools to be able to police the behavior. And to determine if these are appropriate for our city," said Perry.
Search warrants were executed for the following locations:
Pure Massage - 115 Byron St.
Massage Elite - 200 N. Battlefield Blvd.
117 Coastal Way
Massage Time - 316 S. Battlefield Blvd.
1400 Kempsville Rd.
809 Live Oak Dr.
At least 10 arrests have been made in connection with search warrants executed at these massage parlors.
Police are still conducting interviews and gathering information regarding cases.
