Poor Man's DBA?

"Poor Man's (C)" is when you mail your written document back to yourself--is there a form of a poor man's DBA?

I can't find anywhere how much a DBA form in Michigan is and checked out Legalzoom.com to order through them. If the state is cheaper, I rather just do it that way.

Any advice?

I have my business account set up as a DBA. There was no more paperwork than setting up a regular, personal account. I used my social security number rather than getting a tax ID number, because in WI I don't have to collect sales tax on service, and I do no sell any retail products.

If the bank insists on you having a tax ID number, check with a different bank. Your social security number is very legal to use in that place, and the bank already has it, anyway.

go to the website of the county you will be doing business in..for example in google type oakland county michigan

at the website, click on the tab that takes you to business information...or search, business forms..

you want a "doing business as" form ...you download this form, carefully complete the form, have it notarized, make extra copies, and mail it in with a 10$ check. if your name is not already taken, you will have your DBA in about 5 days.

there is a link on the county websites so you can search to see if your name is available. do not try to get a DBA for a name that is not available.

i just did this process.....it's easy!

DBA's are done through the Secretart of State. Most have a website that you can search names, and info on how to file one. They are usally $15-$30. Don't pay a 3rd party for something that simple.

Easy Peasy

If you are in Wayne County, go to the following site:

http://www.waynecounty.com/clerk/a_names.htm

On the right, under "assumed name" there is a form you can download and print off. Fill it out, sign in front of a public notary (you can find them at UPS, Kinkos, just about anywhere) and have it notarized, make 3 copies and send it in. All the info you need (addresses, fees, etc) is at the site I listed above.

It looks like it will cost you $23 to register an assumed name. You'll probably have to pay the public notary about $10. Hope that helps!

In Michigan, DBA's are done at the county seat you practice in. Oakland County costs $10, and you can do it at the county clerk's office in Pontiac. I believe they're good for five years, and they can tell you right when you apply if the name's already being used. If it is, you can probably just add a word or use one different word with the same meaning.
