Praise for today's Courier Mail article

This would be better if I could put in a link, but the stupid Courier Mail site just comes up with an error message (i read it in the hard copy just now), so look it up in the paper or wait till the link works on their site...

Last week there was a particularly ignorant op-ed piece about sex workers in the Courier Mail by Chuck Brooks. I think the highlight was when he compared the decision to become a sex worker with deciding to become a hitman for the Mmpia. Because they're both illegal - oh wait, sex work isn't - well, they're both immoral. Fucking someone for money is obviously as bad morally as shooting them. There were further amazing items in it, but it depressed me too much last week reading it to make a post at the time.

BUT! A sex worker (using the name 'Melissa' in the paper - it's not Melissa Reviewom AE by the way) responded and her op-ed reply is in the paper today. It's excellent - not much that regular users of this site would be surprised by, but it's great to have it out in the everyday community. The idea that a sex worker can be a normal human being, with a regular family life, be a uni student, not be on drugs, and enjoy their job*, is a surprising one for many people and I would like to thank 'Melissa' for her writing whoever she may be. She mentioned that she advertises on line, so whoever you are, good job :grin:



*this is not to ignore or denigrate those WLs who do not fall into these categories or to assert that non-'regular' families are somehow lesser in status

I agree that the judgement of others no matter their creed, nationality or style is the real immorality that seems to be constantly thrown at the easy targets except with great intelligence this time someone spoke up. Congratulations should go to Melissa as she is obviously a lady making choices in her life and is not ashamed to say so.

Amanda's "character" is vividly illustrated in her "dream" of growing up and becoming a prostitute.

She reached this particular choice of vocation because she thought prostitution was a really interesting way to make a living.

Perhaps all the hit man for the Mmpia positions were already filled, but she really liked the idea of not having to follow other people's rules. Like the laws of physics and the Ten Commandments, one supposes.

She calls this newly discovered position (pun intended) her "ideal job", because she no longer had to "grind her teeth at night", preferring apparently to grind other portions of the anatomy, day and night.

Starting out on her great adventure she worked firstly as a cocktail waitress at a strip club; then, having quickly mastered the complexities of the zipper and clasp, became a stripper herself; finally realising her childhood dream by becoming a prostitute – or in more euphemistic terms, an escort. So much for the theory of evolution.

Describing her vocation so joyfully, one wonders if perhaps prostitution should be an official part of our school curriculum and incorporated into Education Queensland work experience preparation.

Perhaps former premier Peter Beattie, who was monomaniacally obsessed with getting this socially beneficial institution legalised in this state, would be willing to surrender his highly paid and tax-Reviewee sinecure in Los Angeles and return to dwell with us earthlings, under the laws he created for the rest of us.

I'm certain that Premier Anna Bligh would have no hesitation in getting him preselected for a smpe seat, thus allowing him to see his handiwork at close quarters by being appointed as the first Queensland Minister for Brothels.

We are told one may not sell one's kidney for $50,000, but one will be unencumbered by government if one wishes to sell a pound of flesh. It's one's body, isn't it? Well, ownership is predicated on use and disposal. Philosophically both are within the boundaries of ownership rights.

However, in both cases we have spillover effects: public hospitals for operations and all the medical consequences of sexually transmitted diseases; abortions resulting Reviewom prostitute pregnancies; the influence of pimps and criminals in the trade; the degrading of our physical and moral environment. Streetwalkers are still operating out there.

The poor and vulnerable would sell their kidneys? Who the hell do you think sells their bodies now? How much violence is perpetrated against prostitutes? A great deal. Why are many prostitutes the product of incest and sexual abuse in general? Why are most drug-addicted?

What effect has this trade on marriage, monogamy, children?

Government has no right to legislate to legitimise a historically vile vice. Ditto bare-fisted boxing, dog fights or self-mutilation.

Beattie's bordellos may be operated Reviewom one's home. Mum is entertaining clients while her kids are doing homework in the kitchen. Savages troll the neighbourhoods, knocking on decent people's doors. Amanda Brooks informs us that her worst-experienced abuse in the trade was Reviewom clients who refused to pay. Well, what does she expect? Purchasers of prostitution "services" don't exactly have much of a bedside manner, boudoir eyes or exceptional qualities as human beings.

George Bernard Shaw said: "I want to be all used up when I die." Amanda has managed this accomplishment long before her demise; not that the recently suicided D.C. Madam is around to tell her so.

I agree Merlin. If one took notice of the negative comments, one gets the impression they are all experts in the industry. They characterise all sex workers as down trodden, STD infected druggies. As for the richard craniums that state, why pay for it when they can get it for Reviewee. They should check their bank balance before they go out, and then mpter they get their "Reviewee" nookie in the back of their car.

While most of the comments are extreme, if you disregard these it's interesting to get a feel for attitudes out there in the general community. It is obviously a very divisive topic. It's no wonder that it is almost impossible to tell anyone else that you participate in the industry.
I was acutually surprised that most of the extreme negative comments seemed to be made by guys.
Anyway Mellisa did a good job expressing herself and I would like to thank and congatulate her.

Brilliant Melissa....well done! A very intelligent and balanced response.

I'm proud to be "part" of the sex industry...at least as a recipient (I first wrote "consumer" but that does't sound appropriate!) who values the integrity and beauty (both inner and outer) of all the ladies with whom I have had the great fortune to share some intimate moments.

I have to admit that I was once among the "masses" in having a fixed, media inscribed, and largely negative perspective of our working ladies. It wasn't until I was in my 40's that I ventured into this wonderful world with some trepidation. What an amazing discovery.....I guess one of modern times greatest secrets! Modern, because the vilification of this industry is only a relatively recent phenomenon. It wasn't that long ago that our "ladies of the night" were held in high regard and were understood to offer a valuable societal service.

Maybe one day that attitude will return more widely, but in the meantime we can all do our little bit to soften the rage and ignorance as Melissa has done.

Some people are unable to discuss this subject in a rational way, especially when religion is introduced into the mix and I have had to agree to disagree on many an occasion when the subject has been brought up.

Melissa's response was very well presented which really got up the nose of the opposing camp, which included my wife. I had to be careful not to sound too supportive of Melissa's viewpoint.
