Pregnant after Miscarriage - wants IHM

Hi there

I have a client who unfortunately had a miscarriage in January of this year. She has had one session of reflexology from me and loved it and has booked a session for tomorrow. I have just received an email from her stating that she has had a faint line on a PG test and thinks she may be pregnant.She has asked if she could have IHM instead of a reflexology session. My gut feeling is to say wait until you have the pg confirmed by midwife or GP and wait until 12 weeks for reflexology or IHM. I know this question has been asked probably many many times before but what would you do. Instinct tells me when in doubt - don't !

What would you do?Am I right on this ?

Hello Trace,

You are absolutely right, when in dounbt, don't! The 1st three months of pregnancy is a defo contraindication. Your client should wait for confirmation and then if she is pregnant she should wait until after the 12 weeks.

Another supporter of when in doubt don't!

With her history (miscarriage) I would definately have her wait until wk12. I'd actually be cautious with the IHM -different modality, but the triple heater points on the head (TCM) are meant to be avoided during pregnancy (over heating the body and downward flow), and there is also another keep away from point on the shoulders, stimulates uterine contrations, GB21. If you are a firm IFM practitioner, I would be VERY cautious with those points even after wk 12.

Thanks for your advice - it is nice to get confirmation that I am doing the right thing. Reflexology is my main therapy you see, the most popular - so when i do an IHM I have to remember what the contra-indications are and try to remember what the 'rules' are !!

PS: Would an Holistic Facial be the same sort of thing. If she wants a facial should I again stipulate she should wait. I do Lymphatic drainage on the face. I am not sure now whether to offer her this instead.

For a facial you've got to look at the products - any essential oils to be concerned about? I'm a great believer the less chemicals the better, and

I wouldn't be worried about LDM just on the face neck, but because of her history, I'd still be tempted to say wait for 2nd trimester.

If she does get a facial, she shouldn't be flat on her back, a large rolled up towel from shoulder to hip on the rightside would give her enough of a tilt to not be flat on her back (I think it's from a 15deg tilt is safe). I'd lower the temperature of everything, so hot towels are warm-hot etc. not so much because a hot towel would heat them up too much, more someone that is pregnant usually is more sensitive to heat.

I was taught that IHM is the one treatment that can be recieved throughout pregnancy, as client does not have to lay down and the abdomen is not worked over.
Avoid using any aromatherapy oils in any stage of pregnancy!
IHM is recommended for expectant mothers to help relax and destress client.
Ensure client relaxes after treatment, offer water and provide thorough aftercare advice.
