Preparing rice for bags/packs

Hello, I am making some rice bags for heat packs.  Is there anything I should do to prepare it?  I put it in the freezer for an hour, let it get back to room temp and then filled my bags. I heard to freeze it first somewhere...maybe that was for flax seed?? ???Do you do anything special first?

I'm not sure if you NEED to freeze it, but it is a good idea because there you could be the slight possibility of bug larvae (sp) in the rice.  Either heat or freezing would kill bugs, and I doubt your rice is contaminated, but, just in case!

A bay leaf will rid your rice of any critters waiting to hatch ---- in fact, I use a couple in each of my canisters of flour or rice......

I am curious about how to make these microwavable heat pack.

What different things can you put in them for the "heat-cold"?
What about scents/herbs?

Anyone make their own?

Does anyone have a nice EASY recipe/directions to make some sort of eye pillow along the same lines? Would it feel nice to have a slightly heated eye pillow??? I think so, guess I'll have to try it out!

hey salemrose, i'm not sure if you've ever had heat on your eyes but i actually don't like it. i like something cool on my eyes. i think it's more relaxing and refreshing to have cool than to have warmth or heat. my clients have always preferred something cool as well.

I'd go with cool on the eyes too. You can put flaxseed eye pillows in the freezer. Flaxseeds are good for eyes since they lay fairly flat, rather than lumpy grains/cherry pits/etc.

Though I really LOVE my marble eye moons, so eye cushions never get a look in with me http://www.lapolarstones.com/stonesets/eyemoon.htm I won't discuss the cost of shipping to Australia, but even so, worth every cent.

Getting back to topic http://www.diamondwayayurveda.com/item133999.ctlg is a very nicely shaped eye pillow. you'd probably need to use it with a tissue underneath it for clients, because I don't think the cover comes off
