If a client wanted to upgrade a 1/2 g.c. to an hour, would you charge the half hour rate ($40) or the difference between the hour rate ($65) minus the half hour g.c.?

We charge the hour rate minus the GC value. So in your case that would be $25. The reasoning is we want to encourage upsizing and that would be what we'd get if the client came in for an hour massage and paid cash anyway.

I only charge the difference between the 30 minute rate and the hourly rate and it doesn't matter if it is a GC that has been purchased or if it is one I have donated. When I donate the GC and the value is asked, I tell them $40, to charge them an additional $40 to upgrade seems to me to be unfair. One time I won a 30 minute GC and upgrade to an hour and was charged the 30 minute rate and it really left me with a bad feeling. I don't ever want to do that to someone else.

Since most of the GC's I donate are for 30 minutes, I hope to upgrade them all to 60 minutes. They start out with a great feeling about me, thinking I am fair and reasonable. They get 60 minutes on the table and are ready to book again!

If a 1/2 hr. gc was given in a promotional factor, Which I do frequently, then I charge for my 30 min. rate. which is $40 to upgrade. If the gc was purchased by someone and the recipient wants to upgrade then I charge only the balance. I feel this is very fair and reasonable. If someone gets one of my promotional gc, and they want to upgrade they are still only paying $40 for 60 min. massage.

Thanks, everyone, for your input. I feel as Sandy does since I donate many 1/2 g.c. for various causes, too.

I also donate 1-hour g.c. at times, and I guess an incentive for coming back would be to give them a discount for their second appointment, or add some extra time or treatment (aromatherapy, foot treatment, etc.).
