Psoriasis

Hi everyone - can you help with the benefit of some advice. I've been asked to give IHM to a friend who suffers from psoriasis of the scalp; psoriasis was in my tuition listed as a contra-indication but my friend insists he has had IHM from other therapists and can't see the problem.

Can anyone offer some clarity? Thaks, jtp

Hopefully I will be able to add some clarity. Psoriasis is a special condition and isnt contagious, however it goes without saying we need to wash our hands after the treatment has ended. The only condition that should be avoided is if a client suffers from weeping eczema, this can be contagious.

So all in all it's fine. I would apply careful pressure but then again it's down to your client and how much pressure they can deal with at the time of treatment. As you will be aware that some of us prefer light pressure in certain areas.

Hiya

We should all wash our hands after every treatment anyway....

ok i have psorasis in the scalp, its not a problem in fact it can be quite relieving, some psoorasis can bleed so just be careful, no nails...


otherwise no problem, psorasis is not really a contraindication to anything!

Hi Tigerbee

Thanks for posting your message. Its good to get input from someone who has Psoriasis. When I was taught IHM, Psoriasis was listed under special conditions where extra caution and care of the client is needed, amongst others listed were Epilepsy, frailty and spondelosis in the neck.

I can understand your view that psoriasis is not neccessarily a containdication but it is a condition in which therapists have to take special care towards their client. As Janice will know IHM is supposed to release any tensions and provide the client with relief and relaxation. The last thing we want to do is to irritate or cause discomfort to our client.

When I do IHM on people with psorasis (was teaching a student tonight and her case study has psorasis) you find that it actually helps relieve the itching etc and also by application of oil at the end of the session much of the psorasis flakes and hardness will be gone by the morning when she washes the oil out of her hair. The only problem either as a practitioner or as a sufferer is someone using nails....pads of fingers are very soothing and dont really cause a problem unless of course the psorasis is so bad they are having hospital treatment for it...
most psorasis is caused by an increased level of stress or a lowered ability to deal with stress at any one point and the IHM is great and releasing these tensions and providing excellent relief....
