question re face massage

Hi all,

During body massage we were taught when going on to do the face, hands were to be washed or wiped and oil to be used from seperate bowl.

I have been doing this for sometime but feel that it disrupts the flow of the treatment, because there is that break.

I know of people who don't do this. Just wondered what others were taught and how you go about it in practice.

Hi Marion,

When I did my body massage course (ITEC), the body massage ended with client having their back treated and then turned over and the top of the bed lifted to do the face massage. Once they were turned over we would then sanitise our hands and we used facial massage cream not oil. That's the way we were taught. I find now that clients like to end with a back massage and to relax in that position for a few moments before getting up and I think Paul's comment on doing the client's face massage first is a great idea. I know its important to keep the flow going but I would think more important to the client to know you have stopped for a moment to clean your hands of the oil before proceeding with the face. Perhaps you could ask your clients if they would like their face done first or at the end and explain that if it's done at the end you will have to stop for a moment. See what their feedback is and go from there.

hmmmmmm, this has really got me thinking now.

I hadn't thought there was a problem with my routine:
Back
Back of legs
Feet
(turn client over)
Front of legs
Stomach
Arms
Upper chest
Face
Head

We were never taught to stop and wash our hands before massaging the face, however now I have read this post and thought about it I think it would be nicer to change my routine:
Face (massage with a facial massage cream)
Upper Chest
Arms
Stomach
Front of legs
Feet
(turn client over)
Back of legs
Back
Ending with a nice relaxing massage of the head

I think this is a much nicer way of ending the massage. Will have to give it a go.

Hi Marion,

I think when you are at college the emphasis on hygiene is so emphasised because many students are very young, just out of school and colleges have a responsability to ensure correct health and safety. Health and safety/hygiene will always take priority.

I always finish with the face if I am doing a full body treatment first, as I feel to end on the face feels correct for me. Hands are washed before you start so are still clean but may have oil on them that is less suitable for the face. I always keep face oil in a seperate bowl and keep a towel on my lap. You can wipe each hand seperatly without it disrupting the flow.

You will find your way. There arenot always right and wrong ways, nothing set in stone except if it has a risk.

Hi thanks Paul I think the idea of starting with the face is great I have been working my way up the front of the body ending with the face before my client turns over (unless they specifically request to start with their back). But this is a great way of gently relaxing them whilst still having clean hands and so I will be doing a reversal of my treatment and starting with the face and working down the body. Well for those who actually want to include their face - some don't. Great stuff.
