rates vs. demographic areas

I found a topic on this subject but it was dated 2005. thought maybe we could make it current. I notice when I see rates that mine differ greatly, maybe it is because massage is not regulated in Pennsylvania, also I am in a fairly rural area, surrounding towns of about 2,500 people and the nearest "city" is only ~36,000 people. Looking for some feedback.

I'm in line with Most other therapists in my area and the thought of raising rates horrifies me, just don't think I could bring myself to do that.

Whereabouts in PA is Muncy? I'm just north of Lancaster, which is about an hour west of Philadelphia and an hour east of Harrisburg. My rates are:
30 minutes $35
60 minutes $60
90 minutes $80

My rates are about average for my area. It seems the day spas charge more but for a private practice I'm average or above in price.

People have asked me for some "oddball" lengths and combinations of different services and I have charged on case to case basis.

60 minutes - $ 85.00- 100.00 (some of my clients are on a fixed income and chronically ill and they get charged less)

90 minutes- 120.00- 150.00 (again for the same reasons as above)
I work in a very affluent area right outside of Philly.

Biggish town (75,000) in a high cost-of-living area, NW corner of WA state, an hour from the border and 1 1/2 hours N of Seattle. Private practice in private office in CHEAP building:

30 min - $35 (quick tx or chair only)
60 min - $65
90 min - $85

Corporate chair: $85/hour, no discounts

Prices the same for any type of work

There are dozens and dozens of MTs in our town, no franchises (WA is a very difficult state to start up a new franchise co. in). There is a massage ed. program in town, a 2-year setup at the community college -- community college is fairly expensive in WA, so although the program is full it is not "pumping out" graduates and only graduates 20 per year. Some of WA state's "original" MTs practice here or v. nearby (over 25 years!), including the MT who wrote our state law many years ago, the former owners of our now-defunct MT school, our current state board president, etc. So there is a broad range of practitioners in town. Oh and also several day spas, many chiro offices, and several multi-therapist clinics, some of which prominently advertise same-day appts. and one of which runs a "massage club."

The high end of prices here for day spas is about $90 for a 50-60 minute session; private practitioners usually top out at $75/hour. Newbs usually start at $50 and offer crazy specials (like $30-$35). My next-door neighbor in my building charges $60/hr; right across the hall from us is a woman who charges $40/hr, or $60/hr for hot stone. She had been away for almost 2 years and was SHOCKED to see my prices when she returned -- I had been at $45 when she left.

I'm in a BIG city (5.4 million, including surrounding suburbs). Cost of living here depends on the item--some things cost more, some cost less. Luxury is rampant here in parts, and not so rampant in others.

In-Studio Table Massage (private practice, in my home-based studio)
30-min massage - N/A, we stopped doing them.
60 min massage - $70
90 min massage - $90
120 min massage - $115

Includes Deep Tissue, NMT, Hot Stone, aromatherapy for no extra cost.
This differs a little from other places. Average for 1 hour is $60-65, but doesn't include stones. If you can find a private practitioner who does hot stone around here, plan to pay $85/hr.

We also have a Maintenance Plan that brings those prices down a little for Frequent Flyers

Home Visit mobile rates:
$100/hr, 1-hour minimum in my particular suburb, 1.5-hour minimum outside my suburb. Some clients in special circumstances get a 10% discount--they're frequent, they pay cash, schedule on weekend mornings for 2 hours or more.

Corporate chair massage rates:
Anywhere from $65-80/hr per therapist, depending on length of event, and whether they want both of us or just one of us.

I think it depends on what your particular market will bear, your costs for rent, living, etc.

I'm paying about $1000/month for office space. So, I do have to charge a bit more. :?

This is exactly what I charge in my area as well.

add $5 for aromatherapy massage
add $20 for body glow salt scrub treatment which is a huge hit right now.
add $10 for body butter hand and foot treatment

I do a peppermint/rosemary foot spray with hot steamy towels for free with all my clients now and tell them something like "Aren;t those essential oils wonderful?" and almost all of them upgrade to an aromatherapy massage next time.

Oddly enough if a client has a $40 massage they typically pay with 2-$20's and that's it. 75% of my client now get aromatherapy massages for $45 and almost all of them without fail pay me $50 and say "keep the change". *laughing* That $5 add on is the best!

By the way - I am charging $15 more per hour than the longest-established massage therapist in the area. And $5 more per hour than the newest massage therapist. Who both have practices immediately in town. Mine is a little ways out of town. And I'm getting busier and busier.

Ouch! We pay $185 mortgage payment (on a short note) for our 3 bedroom, 1500 square foot house on two huge city lots (one big corner lot and one regular city sized lot that makes up the backyard). *laughing* We don't even pay that in housing with BOTH our houses! *wry grin*

I charge $25 for 30 minutes to encourage clients to purchase the hour.



But this time I reprinted my new price sheet I left the half hour off. I'd rather the client get a full hour and a better experience. I have a higher client retention rate if a client comes for an hour than a half hour the first time.
