Re-help with massage on client with a stroke

Hi
i havent been on here long,
im a newly qualified massage therapist and i have been approached by a lady for massage
but she has diabetes which i know is a contra-indication of which i will seek her gp,s permission but she also had a stroke 4 yrs ago.

i have looked on the internet for any answers but cant find any
has anybody any experience in massage with a stroke (client)
please if anyone can help .

i know this lady is waiting for me to come back to her about an appointment.

Hi Ellie

First things first!!! what sort of diabetic is she? is she just diet controlled, medicated or insulin? and for how long. Really and truely depending on these answers will tell you if you need to get GP permission first...

What massage are they after, ie back and shoulders or full body or more targeted to an area,
Are they having the massage just for relaxation or is she looking to improve some functionality?

Do you know what type of stroke she has had and what her functionality is now, this will all make a difference as to what sort of massage you do.....If you can help with the answers I will try and help you back....I often work with people with strokes and the results can be wonderful but as I say it depends what her expectation of the massage is to start with...

Hi Ellie

Should not course you any unusual problems, after a stroke someone can either have partial paralysis which you will have to assist with by stopping the atrophy from getting any worse the other side of the coin is they can have muscles which seem to be constantly tense which require softening.

Each person is different and you need to tailor your treatment to their individual requirements, if you just do a general body massage to start with and then you will get a better idea as to what needs your attention.

Diabetes should not course a problem unless the skin has got very thin, just get them to check the blood sugar levels after the treatment but I have not found it to be a problem with any of my patients.

firstly thank you very much for your promt reply

my client im sure has her diabetes medically controlled,she is mobile with a stick
her stroke hand is curled up and has limited movement

she would be looking to combine relaxation and to improve functionality

i will be seeing this lady tommorow but not for massage,
so i am going to discuss things with her in depth.

are there any other questions that you feel i should be asking her,sorry t ask
but i am going in blind here and i have built up a good rapor with this lady over
the last couple of months and would like to help further if i can .

could i please ask you for your guidance again please,
i have spoken to my client and filled out a questionare

i would be giving a full body massage and would be concentrating
on the shoulder area as this is where th epain is felt.

the stick is used for stability,

are they any massage movements you think that i should leave out?

im planning to do this massage early next week and bearing in mind
that all goes well it will be regular.
