Reflexology and gout

Probably a really silly question. How would you treat a client suffering with gout?

You could suggest using hand reflexology

I presume you're talking about gout on the foot, but ask, because other sites affected include the hands, knees and ears....


If it is the foot.....you would be very lucky to get the sufferer to even touch their toes, as in the acute phase, it is very very painful.

I'm a reflexologist and former gout sufferer. I had it in my big toe and ankle on my left foot. I can certainly confirm that I wouldn't let anyone touch the affected area when it was at it's worst. However, if the gout only affects 1 or 2 joints it's possible to work around it very, very carefully! As has already been mentioned you could do the hands if the gout is in the feet.

I have treated a number of gout sufferers and they did fine with the pressure, although I appreciate that it would be too much for some. The liver reflex is the one which is often completely out, can be almost too tender to work properly. I tend to start very light working on getting a little movement into the joints, it can take a few sessions, but as things loosen up some changes can start to happen and you can start to get in there with some depth.
