Reflexology and Insomnia

Hi all,

I was speaking to a massage client yesterday and she told me she doesn't like reflexology because she finds it overstimulates her and makes her insomnia worse. I've not heard of reflexology having that effect before and wondered what your thoughts/experiences were.

Not a major issue I'm just curious.

I think reflexology treatments can potentially have a stimulating effect as they can stop people feeling depressed and lethargic. They can potentially have a euphoric effect which may be overstimulating for people who already have issues in this direction.

Just throwing out a few ideas

Maybe your client would find a gentle, foot massage style treatment less stimulating?

It is a strange one since reflexology is good at reducing insomnia. Maybe the client finds footwork too stimulating. Maybe hand reflex or Indian head massage is a better option.

Thanks for the replies, I guess she is just not suited to reflexology, it's a shame as she's missing out on a fantastic therapy.

Reflexology is very helpful for insomnia but everyone is different. It may not work for her.
She could try another treatment from a different reflexologist to see how it goes.
If she feels the same, reflexology is good for her insomnia then.

Just a suggestion, but what time of the day does your client have a reflexology treatment? Reflexology is all about rebalancing. Has she had a reflexology with you or is it another reflexologist she saw.

I think this is quite an unusual response and could be some kind of contra action. I also think if a course of treatments were pursued this would balance itself out, giving a treatment in mornings rather than evenings.

As far as I'm aware she had treatments from 2 different therapists with the same results.

She was a case study for a student (probably about 4 treatments) and the treatment times were switched to w/end mornings (I think) but the effect was the same.

I guess its just not for her, a pity, but there you go
