My mum was taken into hospital last week with a very serious hypoglycaemic attack, which has taken a number of days to show signs of improvement.. she has a lot of other symptoms too including serious oedema in her legs and feet which is longstanding. She has a lot of other problems too.. too many to mention hehe.
Fortunately she is starting to respond very well to their care and supervision.
I decided - with some hesitation that I would treat her with reflexology whilst I was there. I was very concerned that I would be told to stop.. but took my kit in anyway.
Since she went in I've given her a short gentle treatment every day during visiting hours. Thankfully the nurses have been very supportive of this and have shown encouragement for me to treat her regularly.
I recall some of my training (not my reflex course but other courses) where they would say don't treat cancer patients, don't treat diabetes, don't treat stroke (well wasn't confirmed but they suspected it at the time), don't treat oteoarthritis, don't treat heart patients and I felt very grateful and reassured about the training I chose because without it I'd have been able to do precious little for her in the hospital setting.
The staff have been brilliant with her, and her oedema is just beginning to respond to their treatment, but I am sure the reflexology sessions are also helping. Because I am more familiar with her I can tell which spots are hotter than normal (something they need to watch) and how her legs are responding in general to treatment.
I guess what I'm trying to say, is I think the support the hospital staff have given for me to do treatments on her whilst she is there is great and shows a greater willingness of those in the conventional medicine circles to gracefully accept complementary therapies with open arms.
