Reflexology refresher courses

Hi, I qualified as a reflexologist 2 years ago but fell pregnant straight away, therefore never really using my new found skills! I'm now very keen to get things back on track, but I feel that I could do with a refresher course. Please can anyone recommend any in the London area??

I also qualified 2 years ago and haven't done much with it as I was trying for a baby which took a year and was then pregnant and now have a little one. I'm also just getting started again and am doing lots of practice on family and friends before letting myself loose on the public. I've reviewed all my notes and I'm currently going through my pitmans book again too.

Are you a member of the AOR and did you keep your membership up? Mine lapsed in October 2005 and I sent off to renew it the other day. I got a call yesterday saying that as I had let my membership lapse for 2 years I had to do another case study and get it marked. Luckily, as it had only lapsed for less than a year I don't have to but if yours has then just to let you know that's what they're asking.

I went on a day at Morley College in London, near Waterloo when I was a new therapist. It was run by Renee Tanner of the International Federation of Reflexologists, and was a confidence building day in which you got to ask for clarification on points you weren't sure on and that kind of thing. I found it excellent, and there were therapists there who hadn't practised for a while so it was worthwhile for them. You didn't feel silly asking what you thought were daft questions! It's worthwhile either contacting the IFR or Morley College to find out if they are running more of these days. Alternatively, you might want to call up your old school and ask them if they will do a little refresher for you. Good luck.

I thought it might be helpful to clarify just how simple it is for expired AoR members to renew their membership. If an AoR member expires for a period of up to 2 years then they can simply renew their membership as usual. If the membership expired for more than 2 years then we need to be assured that that practitioner is still maintaining standards. In these cases we ask whether they have continued to practice reflexology and have been keeping records. Ifyes, then even if they have expired for many years, they can simply renew their membership, but we also ask them to complete a professional declaration form to confirm that they’ve been practising. It’s as simple as that.

Only if a practitioner hadn’t continued to practice during that expiry time, or didn’t keep records, then we ask them to undertake a process called Returning Member Confirmation of Professional Standards (RMCPS). This involves submitting a case study. There’s no requirement for further training or refresher courses.

However I agree with Siobhan and suggest that its good practice for any complementary therapist who hasn’t practiced for a while to consider doing a refresher. There are plenty of refresher courses available out there.

I've always felt I've had excellent value for money, services and support from the AoR - certainly no pressure of any sort in my experience. There are so many resources at my disposal as a member, and I'm glad to say that each year the referrals I've had from being on their practitioner register have paid for my membership. I'm sure, however, that there are plenty of alternative organisations a reflexologist can belong to, such as FHT or Embody.
