ABILENE, TX - A dark room, peaceful music and the sweet sound of babies.
Little hands and legs are squirming around at the West Texas Rehab Center, as infants enjoy their own massage class.
“When you bring the baby home from the hospital, you’re just like, ‘They’re so much!’ They’re just wanting to learn so much about their babies. Some of these mommies and daddies are first-time parents,” JoBeth Willis, with West Texas Rehab, said.
A lot of mothers — especially new mothers — experience stress after having their babies.
“What a great way to relieve some stress, by giving a massage to your baby. Your baby becoming more relaxed, healthier, growing, sleeps better.”
And every movement and position of the mommy’s hands on the baby serves a purpose.
“It helps with digestion, so the babies are digesting their foods more better and fully, so they can grow. It also helps them relieve some pain if they’re having some gas.”
Not only does the class help babies, but the session offers a support group for mothers.
“One of the neatest parts about this class is when the mommies start to talk to each other and asking, ‘What do you do in this situation?’ or ‘My baby’s only sleeping two hours and I’m having to feed every couple of hours.’”
Willis said this class is only for newborns and babies up to a year in age — but if you have a baby or child with special needs or disabilities, West Texas Rehab offers another class for children up to seven.
