Renting room advice

Hi i hope that someone may be able to advise here.
I have been in my room at a hair and beauty salon since June last year straight from qualifying. I am slowly building up my cleint base but i am never that busy and now it has slowed right down and i am only have a couple of clients a week and just recently none. I love it where i rent but it is noisy and when someone turns on the taps its like the floodgates have opened and it disturbes the treatment. i like the fact to that i pay as i go rent so i only pay rent for the clients i have treated. However...
There is a salon around the corner that has new treatment rooms opening and out of interest i phoned up. Well it sounds great, all new and modern but rent has to be paid even if you dont have clients and the starting times are not great either i.e clash with school run.
I would also have to rely on my clients coming with me and building up lots more. There is also another therapist doing some of the treatments i do there already and she will be there all the time. Is it normal for the owner to want to have a treatment off me to see what i'm like. Its not as if i am working for them. I didn't have to do this at the salon that i'm at now.

Am i just putting barriers up or should i stay where i am???

I'm sorry to hear that business is a bit slow for you at present ... I will leave it those infinitely more experienced than me to give you some good, solid advice on building up your client base etc., but I personally always go with my gut instinct when it comes to finding a great treatment room.

That's pretty much common-place, from my experience ...

Absolutely! Perks of them doing all the really hard work (i.e. maintaining the business, premises, marketing etc.)! Seriously 'tho, it's a great way of finding out what potential therapists are like, whether you get the feeling whether they would fit in with your ethos and clients, and you also get to tell clients first-hand what the treatment and therapist is like (esp. if you are offering some nifty treatments that they haven't come across before). Because ...

No, not in the usual sense BUT if you are working from their salon, you are very much part of their reputation.

Maybe, just maybe, this is why you feel as if you aren't attracting new clients any longer at the place you are currently renting? It seems as if you have come across a good little business in this new salon ... but go with your heart

Thankyou Moonpoppyfor replying. I guess that i knew all these things but i guess i just need to gain more experience and confidence.
Business has slowed but i don't know why. I guess you have to keep on the ball but i suppose i need to check back on previous threads to get some tips.
I really don't want to make the wrong decision, if there is such a thing!!

I know, confidence is my "thing" to work on too They always say that "the only wrong decision is to make no decision" ... I feel sure you will choose the right place for you (maybe not this new one, maybe there is something much more sparkly and better for you just around the corner!).

Thanks for the book recommendation too. We are having a local FHT meet on Monday with the rude M word man from FHT. Hopefully he'll have some good tips as well.

I went round and met the new owner of the salon. I think that it is going to be great and i think i would be silly not to be on board because i think it will have a big impact on the salon where i am at the moment. The only downside is that there are already therapists there that do half of the treatments i do and am not allowed to advertise that i do them, but i can tell my clients that i dothose treatments. I will just have to get selling myself more. If i stay where i am then i think i wont be doing alot of treatments anyway due to this lovely new modern salon that has it all.

The day has finally arrived and i am starting at the new salon today. My room is drop dead gorgeous and painted in earthy colours with a lovely new comfy couch.
Also two of my regulars have booked in with me which is fantastic. A great positive start.

I am excited but also a little apprehensive.

You were right there has been a host of abundance coming my way but not at the new salon, but with my mobile business.

Things have changed dramatically and i am now out on my own promoting myself how i want to and dancing to my own tune.

You know, i didn't go with my gut feeling but i dont think of this as a mistake because it got me off my backside and out there getting up in front of groups of people giving talks and promoting myself which has paid dividends. I always wanted to be mobile in the first place.
