Responding to a mailed resume

Yesterday I receive a cover letter, resume and reference list from a massage student.  This student is attending the same school I went to so I would like to offer some support.The problem is the cover letter, resume and the "refeverence" list is riddled with typos, spelling errors, layout errors, etc....   Just a very poorly written and thought out set of correspondence.  She says she wants to work at my spa because of how I treat my employees.  I don't have a spa or any employees.  It just gets worse from there.  Obviously she found my name in the phone book and didn't make any effort to find out about my business.Should I call her and tell her about these problems?  Mail or email a response detailing the problems or call the school and talk to career services to help her?  Or lastly just ignore it?  When I went to school there they spent hours working with each student on proper letters and resumes.  Mine was checked and graded at least 3 times by 2 different people and I wasn't even going to use one.  My class wasn't required to mail out X number of letters as a class project so I am assuming she isn't required either.What do you think?  I would like to help her but not seem like a jerk by going over this horrible excuse of an introduction and making her feel bad.

I would at least send a letter or email to let her know that you don't have a spa or office and are not hiring anyone.  Maybe she wrote the cover letter for some one else and forgot to change the name and address.

I think you should call her on this.  Send a letter letting her know you received her resume and kindly help her by letting her know with this kind of resume, no one will hire her.  Obviously, in a nice way.  This does not mean she would not make a great employee or therapist.  I am a Massage therapist.  I did not graduate with a degree in business.  Luckily I have a lot of common sense, and I run a successful business.  My grammer and spelling leave a lot to be desired.  But that doesn't make me an undesirable therapist.  Maybe, you could help her out and give her your phone number if she needs any advice or help in the future. She sounds like she may need a mentor or she may not have been lucky enough to attend a great school, or she may not have anyone in her life to help guide her.  Just a thought!

I called the school's career services to let them know she could use some help.  Her school has a very good career services department that will bend over backwards to help in writing and in finding work.  I have contacted them a few times since I graduated and they are always very helpful.  This counselor is going to meet with her today to help out.  I did offer to have her call me and let her know I will help all I can.  Today I will email her to offer my help and any mentoring I can give.  The school is several hours away but she is from this area so she might be coming home this weekend.  I might be able to reach her before she leaves and meet with her.  A formal letter would be better but wouldn't reach her in time.  Me mentoring is a very scary thought.......

Answer me this question.If you had sent out that resume and got a call regarding the mistakes how would it make you feel?Granted, it may be awkward at first for both of you but you will be saving her more embarrassment in the future.Emails, message boards, ims are one thing but a resume needs to be proofread.I would appreciate it despite feeling embarrassed.Robyn
