Rich massage therapist

Hello.

I found this forum via Google, and I am finding it very helpful. I'm moving into a period of my life where I want to follow my interests and this has brought me here. After reading through a few posts (specifically one by Bannick) my curiosity kicked in, and I started thinking about whether or not any Therapists make it to millionaire status? I know that a lot of people move into this line of work as a lifestyle choice, and to some this particular post may offend (so I'm sorry if this is the case!).

Some family friends have moved into similar businesses, and I always feel that they don't value themselves (or their services) highly enough, and that's a great shame because some of these people could do very well.

Anyway, I have rambled on enough. So if anyone has any related stories to share, I would love to hear them!

Massage isn't well payed no, but it has many other benefits that I would rate well above money. When a stressed out/depressed/anxious client comes to you feeling horrible, and leaves feeling great, that in itself is very gratifying.

If your sole outcome is to enter a profession with the intention of becoming a 'millionaire' massage therapy definitely isn't for you.

No offence taken this way. You have a valid point about therapists undervaluing themselves and their services. It very common.

Complementary healthcare often attracts people that are nice, compassionate and well meaning (including the pixie of course). Low self-esteem seems to be a common factor, and therefore fears of being a business person and so forth come up - stressful in its only right. And some silly idea that money is dirty and unspiritual - but that's a thread in its own right. This isn't true for everyone and isn't cut in stone. Also (another gross generalisation, but said very respectfully) many therapists are ill themselves and don't have the energy to continously work. Dealing with people and they problems can be quiet draining. So why go into it? Well, learning about healing is often about learning to heal oneself, and many people may just train in a therapy as part of their healing journey, whether they consiously understand that or not.

We all have are own stories and opinions and I'll let others say they bit.

In terms of business it would be very different to be able to earn lots of dosh, as there is only so many hours that you can see people, and life is unpredictable and cancellations are common, overheads increasing all the time at the moment, which reflects in the income received. Anyone wanting to be a therapist just to make a living are in for a shock. I see it as a vocation that happens to pay the bills and a nice bit to play with on top.

Not everyone is cut out for running their own business, regardless of the industry. But to me it's a skillful means of making a living and doing the work that I'm passionate about.

Although there may not be an abundance of wealthy therapists, I've come across several. Yes, there are only so many hours in one day but there are ways of adding income streams, and of course there is the fact that many open centres or spas in various forms so it's not just the one therapist.

At the extreme, let's take Paul McKenna. He's the wealthiest hypnotherapist in the world. Book deals, TV shows, training school, seminars and for the wealthy - clients. One of my clients was going to do his weekend weight loss programme in London (luckily came to me instead). Excluding the hotel cost but including lunch, the weekend cost $20,000 per person on this seminar for 12 people, and he fills them. Perhaps some of the "eww dirty money" brigade will make negative comments about this but how many people has he helped in the process, some of whom have had results with just a £10 book or CD?!

I agree with RP, it's an industry that has a lot of people in it who either don't want to earn much or don't know how to. If you want to be a millionaire, it's certainly not on the list of likely industries to do so but people shouldn't be scared to value their work and make what they are worth. I packed in a very well paid career to do this and my outgoings and lifestyle were in line with what I was earning so regardless of the reasons I came into this, I wouldn't have done so if I had thought it was impossible to make a decent income.

Edit: I just realised this was a massage therapy thread rather than therapy in general and remembered which of my posts you were referring to. The therapist in question is a friend of mine in Canada. I don't know the full ins and outs of how he managed to retire so young but I know his clientele were pretty much all high end professional sports people and his wife is also a massage therapist (she got bored and went back to work, she half owns a very successful wellbeing clinic), I know that he also partnered a nutritionist for some of his work (who is still his wife's business partner) and I know the nutritionists current business model and most of how he is also very successful. The point is, it can be done if you are that way inclined.

No-one just seeing clients will become rich. The usual sign that soemone is 'rich' is that they actually make money while they sleep, they do not need to work 40hrs a week to make money, money is coming in regardless of how many hours they 'work'. This usually means they own a company and have lots of people doing the work for them, the extreme is the global empire that makes money 24hrs a day, they have investments. Quite often for a therapist to make money they need to be a landlord (a wellness centre where rooms are rented out), or an employer (a wellness centre where people work), or run workshops, or write books, or produce DVDs, make a brand name, turn it into a global empire and have other people running the workshops for you. Therapists don't generate wealth by seeing as many clients as possible, that limits how much you can make. This applies to any business, if you only make money from what you do yourself, you are limited by how much you can do yourself, you need to be making some money by not having to do anything.

I know several people who earn good hourly rates but massage is hard physical work. Most therapists max out at 4 or 5 massages a day if they're working every day and I doubt if you could keep that up for long if you were working 5 or 6 days a week.

Then you have to find time for marketing, bookkeeping etc so this starts to sound like the kind of stressful life most of us become therapists to avoid. Most therapist I know who earn good rates throttle back on the amount of work they do & learn other skills/do other fun things with their time.

As others say above you can open a clinic, start an agency, do the DVD etc but then you're a business person not a massage therapist anymore.

If you charged £50 per hour and did 40 clients per week, then you could probably earn a million over 10 years. Whilst I dont know any 'massage therapists' doing full body massages that earn this, I do know sports therapists that earn close to this.

As other posters have said on here, you dont go into this business to make money, but if you have an entrepreneurial head on your shoulders, then you may possibly diversify into different aspects of the therapy profession, which has the potential to make you a millionaire.

I read somewhere recently that you can't count yourself rich unless you have something money can't buy - and the satisfaction of working on massage clients could be that thing that money can't buy!

I don't know if you've come across a book called How To Make $100,000 Dollars A Year As A Massage Therapist, but an American therapist called Meagan Holub? She has been quite controversial in the US because some therapists are infected by the fear of money thing, as mentioned above. It's a bit US-oriented, of course, (one of the suggestions is to maximise insurance earnings, but she is operating under a different health system) but still worth a read.
