Ridiculous Things That Massage Therapists Have Told Clients

Here is a story that a client shared with me earlier today:

A woman went to see a massage therapist. During the massage, the therapist said, "Your scalp is really tight!"
The client asked, "Really? Why is it so tight?"
"Because you have a lot of brain activity," replied the massage therapist.

After sharing that story, my client asked, "Is that the stupidest damn thing you've ever heard, or what?"

t005 t005 t005 My client's question made me laugh, but it got me thinking. There's got to be more stories like that one floating around out there. So, fess up!

Have you been a client and had your massage therapist tell you something truly inane or obviously wrong?

Ridiculous Things That Massage Therapists Have Told Clients

Here's a not-so-proud moment from my own experience:

I was doing a massage and the client was chatting with me, asking lots of questions about anatomy, what she's feeling, what I'm doing, etc. It was a nice conversation. As I started working her glutes, she asked me about sciatica and the piriformis muscle. I promptly described Piriformis Syndrome and added that it is unlikely for piriformis to be the only irritated hip rotator.

She asked about the hip rotators, at which point I used a poorly chosen metaphor: "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids" (the old television cartoon show). I said piriformis was like Fat Albert and the Deep Six could be described as "Piriformis and Friends"... :grin:

To top THAT off, I then poked at her quadratus femoris and said, "Here's Mushmouth!"

Sometimes I am not smart. Fortunately for me, she had a sense of humor and enjoyed the massage! :

lol I can't recall a specific blunder, but I do remember reprimanding myself for thinking outloud, (shooting from the hip) when a client asked a question instead of loading the brain first. I have better learned to thinketh before I speaketh... maybe

One told my friend's husband that he was 'too big to get a massage'. He's a big guy but he's not so big that the table is a safety issue.
