Rolfing

Hi,
Rolfing is not very well known in the UK, and as far as I'm aware there are no training courses here, but there are a few practitioners. In the process of developing information on rolfing for the CompTogether website, I've become interested in having some treatments. I was wondering if anyone has experienced the series of treatments or the training offered? Any thoughts on your experiences would be appreciated.

As far as a I know Rolfing is very similar to Structural Integration and I know a couple of practitioners. I am a student at University of Westminster and one of my tutors runs courses in Myofascial Techniques in Structural Intergration, his name is Mark Gray and the website is http://www.integrativetherapies.co.uk/
I did a couple of workshops with him and it's quite amazing. Very deep massage without oil, very effective too. Structural Integration is usually 10 sessions and it also uses very deep pressure to change posture and deep patterns of holding your body.

Hi there - well - i thoight rolfing was very simialr to cranial sacral therapy !
Im sure it is similar techniques or similar beginnings - I have a large book on Crainal Sacral - I hsall go back & read history
ooh or is it Bowen . ..sometrhing more popular here is very similar to Rolfing just has a different name .. .

I have not Rolfing myself, but my partner, (Gentleman on here) has, some years ago to help deal with some particuarly difficult stuff that he was going through at the time. From what he told me it is a form of deep tissue manipulation where the therapist pushes into the muscles in order to not only realign everything, but also to help release the emotions that are held within the body.12 sessions are receommened in all, although not everyone will need all of them. Although highly effective and beneficial at both points I mentioned above, it is though according to Gentleman at times excruciating painful, and not for the faint hearted. The lady he went to see was called Jenny Crewdson, (not sure if this is the correct spelling) and used to practise somewhere near Victoria Station in London.

Hi thanks for the useful feedback everybody. I've now done some further investigation (will put the results up on the CompTogether website in the next few weeks). Rolfing, as trademarked by the Rolf Institute, is more or less the same as Structural Integration (taught by the Guild of Structural Integration) but both, I've been given to believe are not taught in the UK (so very interested in Mark's website - will check that out later).

I did speak to Jennie about the treatment, and rolfing does work deeply with the connective tissue, and has been dubbed the 'scream therapy' in the past. This I'm not so sure of - how do people feel about inflicting pain on the body to make it better? Surely if we feel pain, at the very least, its your body's way of saying stop what your doing, this is not good??? Any thoughts?

although painful, it is beneficial I have been told, and I can only assume that if the client is in pain anyway then they are willing to have a little discomfort to get better?

My wife, my daughter and I went through the 10 rolfing sessions in australia last year. Through a series of unforeseen events, we went to 2 different rolfers( both of them from the rolf inst). My experience with the first rolfer was 'pain!pain!pain!' The second rolfer who did most of the other sessions with me was fine - no pain? Since then , I discovered that it is how the rolfing is done i.e. how patient the rolfer is which makes a difference to the result of the session.

On the other hand, both my wife and my daughter did not feel much if any pain with both the rolfers. Guess I must be a wimp! lol.

Did plenty of research on rolfing if I can help with anything.
