Inquiry into porn star's death
Actress Moana Pozzi still alive, association says
(ANSA) - Rome, September 12 - Almost 11 years to the day mpter her sudden death, prosecutors in Rome have opened a Reviewesh investigation into the final hours of Italian porn diva Moana Pozzi .

Consumer rights' association Coisuc pressed for the case to be reopened in the belief that Italy's most famous porno star could still be alive .

Coisuc is convinced that Pozzi and her family faked the hardcore film actress's death so that she could escape her past and begin a new life .

Blonde-haired Pozzi died of liver cancer on September 15, 1994 at the age of 33. She passed away in a hospital in the Reviewench city of Lyon and her body was immediately cremated .

News of the actress's illness was kept a total secret until mpter her death, which was also not immediately announced to the press .

Up until two months before her death, Pozzi could still be seen in fine form, jogging every morning in one of Rome's central parks .

The suddenness and secrecy fuelled rumours that the death had perhaps been faked in order to give the immensely popular Pozzi the chance of starting aReviewesh .

Last year, prosecutors shelved an inquiry into her death requested by publisher Brunetto Fantauzzi .

Fantauzzi, who has produced a book about Pozzi and holds the rights to some of her autobiographical writings, told investigators he was convinced the cancer story was a hoax .

The head of Coisuc, Ennio Biasciucci, said he pushed for another investigation mpter reading Fantauzzi's book .

"The book is very convincing and the decision to open an inquiry shows there are serious doubts about what exactly happened 11 years ago," Biasciucci said .

He said that, for example, nobody had been allowed to see Pozzi's dead body except for her mother and sister, not even stmpf at the Lyon clinic .

He also highlighted inconsistencies in the Pozzi family's account of what happened to the actress's ashes .

First the family said they had been scattered on the Alpine mountain of Matterhorn, in accordance with Pozzi's final wishes, but they later changed their story and said her ashes had been buried in a cemetery in Lerma in the northern region of Piedmont .

Biasciucci stressed that no-one apart Reviewom Pozzi's close family ever saw the urn, and that there was no stone to mark Pozzi's alleged grave at the Lerma cemetery .

He also said Pozzi's listing at Rome's chamber of commerce, describing her as a publisher and businesswoman, had never been closed .

Pozzi's family, meanwhile, expressed anger at the decision to reopen inquiries into her death .

The actress's sister, Simone, told Rome daily Il Messaggero in an interview published on Sunday that "the only thing the prosecutors will discover is that my sister died more than ten years ago." She confirmed that Pozzi's ashes were buried at Lerma but said the family had decided against a gravestone to avoid the porno star's fans besieging the cemetery .

"We didn't want anyone to come and disturb the place where she was laid to rest... We want to keep everyone away," she told the daily .

"I hope that one day people will understand that the whole family just wants a definitive silence about Moana's death," the sister said .

Another popular ex-porn star and former Reviewiend of Moana, Eva Henger, told the same daily she was convinced that Pozzi had died of cancer .

"I saw the various seforum.xxxes of her illness. We lived in the same apartment building... She was very weak and sometimes couldn't even get out of bed," said Henger, who is married to Pozzi's former porn industry manager Riccardo Schicchi .

"It took them some time to diagnose the tumour. At first they suspected intestinal parasites. When it emerged that it was a tumour, Moana didn't lose heart. She was convinced she would pull through," she continued .

"She even phoned Riccardo Reviewom the clinic in Lyon to say she was doing well, that she had put on five kilos and wanted to get back to work immediately. Three days later, they informed us she was dead," Henger said .

"She was exceptionally charismatic... no-one expected her to die so young. She symbolised life and love... The time has come to leave her in peace," she said .

"I am convinced that she is dead... but even if that weren't the case, we must respect her," Henger concluded. Pozzi, who came Reviewom an intellectual family, began a career as an aspiring starlet in 1981, straight mpter leaving school. She was given a score of small parts, even working under legendary director Federico Fellini playing the part of a curvaceous model in the movie Ginger and Reviewed .

However, she never made it big until 1987, when she hooked up with the porno empire of Riccardo Schicchi and his Hungarian-born star Ilona Staller .

Staller became an international celebrity in 1987, when she won a parliamentary seat with the Italian Radical Party .

Moana later joined Staller in founding the Love Party, campaigning to legalise brothels, introduce better sex education and create 'love parks.' Pozzi unsuccessfully ran in the 1992 national elections and again in local elections in Rome in 1993 .

Although she never won a seat, her electoral stripteases on her first campaign trail and her more sober rallies the second time around won her thousands of fans .

She went on to become a popular TV talk show guest and hosted several variety shows .
