At our Friday morning LEADS meeting, we often see this one chiropractor who has a completely mobile business, traveling to patients' homes and businesses the same way outcall massage therapists do. This morning, we saw his brand-new mobile facility. He has been working on this idea for several months, he said. He took an old box van and converted it into one rockin' mobile office, complete with waiting area, desk space for his laptop and files, and cabinets to hold his equipment. It looks fabulous!

More importantly, it got our minds to thinking. We were encouraged to do something like that way back when we first got started (2 years ago, before we signed our FIRST least-- the one that just ended). I had absolutely no clue how such a thing could work. Now, we've just gotten into a new 4-year lease, and we love the place and fully intend to go with it and grow and develop and learn, but I think we may have hit on an idea for *after* that. It could go very well indeed with some of our longer-term plans/ideas....

Somewhere on the forums there used to be a really sweet pic of an MT's massage "bus". It may be located in one of the threads, but I am not sure. It had the words massage silk-screened in different sized fonts as I recall. Check around, maybe you can find it. I only had time to add the links, and not actually look through them.

I have heard of this from a client visiting from another city before. I have been putting some thought to it myself, but am also way deep into my current business. Of course we have all seen similar businesses in other career fields. I have seen plenty of dog grooming vans and just recently I saw a veterinarian van called "Doc at Your Door". It is definitely a low treaded path in our field, and it's always best to do something when you first think about it so you get your name out there first, don't give time for others to start doing it as well, then it just seems like everyone is a copycat and there are more than enough options for the same service. It is better to be at the head of the race before the market becomes over saturated. Good luck.

Yeah, I know-- it would be great to be able to do it "right now", but it really wouldn't be *wise*. We've just signed a 4-year lease on a new office space, and we barely have enough left in savings to get us by until the place will be ready to occupy and we can start making money again. I wish we could, though! Sigh.... The ubiquitous "someday" strikes again, LOL!

Just saw this post while searching for something else.

I had this idea several years ago, not too long after I was licensed. I looked into a toyhauler (used to transport 4-wheelers, motorcycles, etc) which had a large open area in the rear and a tiny bathroom with a (very) mini-kitchen up front with an under-the-counter fridge, sink and microwave.

In FL one is required to have an establishment license before opening an office. Wanting to be completely legal before putting out several thousand dollars, I contacted the Massage Board here as to whether this even required an establishment license, since it's not really a permanent office (or is it??) and would be used strictly for outcalls to a client's home (which, of course, doesn't require an establishment license). I was told, at the time, that it had been presented to the board before and was judged to be in too much of a "grey area" as to the "professionalism" and image of massage. I was surprised, and frankly quite irritated at the answer.

I still think it's a fabulous idea and if anyone knows that things have changed in FL, I'd be interested to hear it.

pear, we're in Texas as opposed to Florida. I didn't think of those objections. At this point, we have tossed that idea onto the "way back" back burner. Thanks for the input. I might someday call and ask the TX board about it. I do know that the chiropractor told us that the chiro board told him that they'd never been asked about it before. That's not the massage board, nor is it in FL, though.

You know, the 'professionalism' remark about mobile massage business really irritated me! Professionals do this all the time. There are gourmet food stands, pet groomers, nail salons, even traveling labs, mammogram units and health clinics on wheels!

My only concern with a mobile business these days would be the cost of gasoline! The way things are going it wouldn't surprise me to see it hiked up to close to $5.00 per gallon in some states, depending not only on the price gouging by the oil companies & gas stations but also the taxes that are being piled on every gallon that gets pumped into your tank too!

Gas here in MA. is already at $3.99 a gallon and at some gas stations in CT. it is over $4 :shock: . And we haven't even gotten to Memorial Day yet :irked:

My husband is considering getting a motorcycle to ride back and forth to work. I am just worried he will get hurt with all the animals we have crossing the road at all hours... not to mention the animals that drive who 'don't see' motorcycles.

I wouldn't like the idea of a motorcycle either, for those very same reasons - the accident rates for them is also higher due to the fact many motorists either don't notice them or give them the same room they would for another car! Almost everyone I know who has had one ended up having to "lay it down" at least once (to avoid a worse accident), with either nasty brush burns or bad bone breaks. I'm sure they can feel like a blast to drive, & certainly are cheaper on gas, but the risks just don't seem worth it, to me anyway.

Tell him if he buys one, that you're buying a major life-insurance policy on him at the same time! If I were in the market for a car, I'd be looking for something like a Prius (though any electric car can have other issues too - such as if you get in an accident & the battery compartment is compromised the EMTs will not touch the car, or you, until the Fire Co. comes - because the entire vehicle becomes electrified!)

There are cars that run on ethanol, but that fuel requires bio-fuels, which take up valuable food farming land - so there's still quite an environmental impact using them. Some new options include having your currant car switched over to run on hydrogen!

I remember seeing a similar concept years back when I was in school, in one of the massage mags. A massage therapist had converted an RV into a massage room and went to mostly big corporations. Awesome idea, and as I remember from the article, the woman did very well. That said, any Dr, chiro or otherwise that does house calls these days is awesome in my book. Nice to bring back old time customer service
