Scar Tissue -

Hi All

After two lumber decompressions, one of which was a revision I am still in pain quite a lot.

I am at work (everyone knows the situation out there and most try to return to work as they are scared of losing thier jobs) but I am told that I dont look comfortable at work which I am not and life is hard.

Anyway I insisted that the surgeon referred me back for another MRI scan which I had. The results showed that I still had a prolasped disc in the same place as the surgery but it appears only slight but they cant see it as there is scar tissue which is blocking the view.

The radiologist stated that the theca nerve was being impinged to which I asked a doctor what that meant and he said that it was nothing to worry about as the theca is greek for coat and it wouldnt cause any problems.

I asked a colleague about this scar tissue and was told that scar tissue was dead tissue and should be removed via further surgery.

Does anyone please know what scar tissue is and whether it should be removed so that they can view the disc properly please ??

Scar tissue is part of the healing process. Remove it and the resulting wound will heal with... scar tissue.

More important that being able to see if you are alright - is are you alright? It is normal to be uncomfortable after injury or surgery. If this is excessive or prolonged, it may mean further surgery is required but more likely help with rehabilitation is what will help, and this side of things is often left to chance, or at least minimum input.

If you'll forgive the analogy, you can't get out of a hole by digging deeper, so if the surgeons are saying more surgery is not the answer, they may well be right. There will be aspects to this situation that are not dealt with by surgery (nutrition, posture, spinal adjustment and alignment etc) and they might yield more fruit now. But that would need top be discussed with your favourite osteopath etc in person.

Theca is not actually a nerve, it is the covering of the spinal cord, it is the coat surrounding the nerves as mentioned, it is the crumple zone that keeps the more delicate bits safe, so unless you are concerned about worsening neurological defecit, I would start to shop around for help with the practical side of the next phase of recovery.

Hi there

Sorry tohear that you are still in a lot of discomfort.

Sometime surgery is not the only answer and as kvdp suggests, you might want to try something else.

Could I suggest looking up a Bowen Therapist in your area? I am biased as I am a practioner myself but I feel you may get a good response with this treatment and you will know after 2 - 3 sessions whether it is working for you and therefore a relatively cost effective option.

As others suggest, scar tissue is something normal after the surgery.

However, there is an abnormal scar tissue which traps nerves and other sensitive structures. Usually, it depends on body's tendency to create this abnormal scar tissue. Also, bleeding during traditional spine surgery increases chance of creating abnormal scar tissue.
