hi i feel like crap last week i started with sciatic pain on my left side friday i gave up and had to go to the docs got the usual tablets diaempam co codomol and naproxin but i still feel so painful i know they are probley helping but this is the sort of pain you forget about when it is gone bit like labor lol
any7way any tips bearing in mind i have a chronic back problem for the last 18 years and have treid nearly everything bar surgery

I know I'm a bit late but I have sciatica and have had for some years...left hand lower back ache with numbness and tingling on the top of the right leg...I had an anti-inflammatory recommended to me about 6 months ago available from Healthspan called Bromelain.It is a natural anti-inflammatory derived from pineapple. I take one a day (but you can take two) and though I wont say it has cured the problem it has certainly helped.
 
thanks your not too late i am still in bad pain my muscle relaxents have finished so i am on painkillers ,it has now been two weeks i may have to go back to the doctors on monday worse is getting up out of a chair or when i have stood for so long but it will get better
 
Sorry to read about your pain c_r...have you tried massaging the painful area with lavender oil? this helps me but then mine is only moderate pain.Gentle stretching exercises help too as they release the constriction on the nerve, I guess though you have tried all these! The magnetic belts have been recommended to me and my sister for the pain.Just a few thoughts.

A littlebit late but I have an aromatherapy recipe that may serve you well if you still have problems with sciatica, i made this recipe up for my neighbour not even 2 weeks ago and she was so impressed with the relieving effects from it. It is from one of my aromatherapy books:

2 drops of Lavender
1 drop of Chamomile
1 drop of Juniperberry
mixed in 10 ml carrier oil
Massage gently over the effected area (including the leg/s)

Taken from 'The Very Essence-A Guide to Aromatherapy' by Lisa Burke et al (2005:70)

Bathing with these oils can be a tonic to soothe the pain. My neighbour also works with me at our local primary school doing the lunch-time session so over the course of just a couple of days we both noticed a difference with her walking as I canimagine sitting and laying down must be just as painful.

i had sciatica when i was pregnant and the best thing i found for it was acupuncture.

there are various yoga moves that are good for preventing it (when you do get rid of it) so you might want to post in that forum too? (sorry, not beinga teacher of yoga i can't remember exactly what they are)

thanks for your replies no it is no better the docs say it is coming from the disc so i shall have to see trying exercises the physio gave me but most of them i have been doing cos i have had a back problem for years

Compassion forthe pain you are experiencing!

Pain~!!!!! comes in two shapes or forms, acute & chronic. Acute generically from external trauma, like a car-crash, and chronic from life experiences (emotions, posture, up-bringing, diet et al.). Where having a baby fits, don't ask!!

So, assuming that you have NEVER been in an acute-type incident, the pain you are experiencing, will be as a result of life-style factors. Are you over-fat? How is your posture? Do you and have exercised regularly throughout your life? How is your diet? How is your emotional state? and so on.

From an observational standpoint,painis theBODYS way of informing you something needs attention. You are not your body, therefore we have a communication system which links us to it, commonly called the nervous system. The body, like US wants to BE LOVED. Current epidemiological (group) evidence suggests that people are very unhealthy, lazy, and generically ignore the body.... (to the extent that the BODY would love to be treated). Imagine trying to get fresh water from a stagnant stream.

During the acute stage, topoloical treatments such as aromatherapy oils, hot/cold treatments (bath), soothing music, and elevating the legs, will be effective; and personally I would HIGHLY recommend acupuncture.

What happens then?? Once you are through the Acute/ Pain stage, will you follow your BODYS message to deal with the CAUSE of the pain, rather than wait for the symptoms to reappear.

Invariably, back pain is a chronic condition, and can and DOES lead to SCIATICA!! Think of a spring (your spine) being constantly compressed by gravity. If we have no awareness of how to hold this complex system of bones upright, then problems will ensue. NOW is the time to change how you feel about your body. ONLY by taking personal responsibilty to change how we operate within our body will the outcome change.

I would highly recommend you find a good yoga/ tai-chi/ therapy-based exercise class.

I am an experienced personal trainer/ movement & exercise therapist; using tai-chi, yoga, and compatible Western science to heal the body.

hi a update for you all still suffering from the pain, doctor sent me to physio but they cannot do anything for me doc is giving me now two pain killers one aniimflamary and a nerve tablet if i take all of them which he says i cannot drive which at the moment is my life line i cannot walk far. so i have to keep to a happy medium so i only take half the dose which means i am still in pain but what can i do remain housebound or at least get out for very short trips i have to go back to the docs again next week so this time i am going to ask to be refered to the hospital

I understand what you are going through and I feel for you.

Have you ever tried a Massage Therapist for your back problems? You should give it a try as it would help you a lot. Once we start getting older and having to care for many, we tend to forget oneself and bingo back problems. Fing an experience one and have two to three session with and see how you will feel than, you can decide to carry on getting those therapies or not. I believe you will feel a great difference and you pain will eventually go away.

hi joe i have tried massage and yes it does help at the time but as soon as they have finished bang there goes the pain again, i am now being refered to a nuero surgeon but i do not want a operation. they have found out along with other things that the canal has narrowed therefore putting pressure on the nerves they discovered that since my last scan my back has got a lot worse but there you go at the moment i have cut down on my painkillers cos i feel that they are only masking the condition and i would rather try to find what i can do and cant i am going to save the tablets for when i feel like at the begining that i cant bear it

Sciatic pain is so debilitating.

I would also suggest a gentle therapy such as Bowen Therapy and then a longer term committment to something another post suggests Tai Chi or Pilates or Yoga.
