How many of you wear scrubs as your uniform and why? Not to offend anyone, but here in Australia we think it's strange that MT's wear scrubs to work. Is it as common as we think? What's up with that?

BTW I am American but I did all my studying and live in Aus.

We wear scrubs to work in. My husband and I own our little practice (just the two of us-- no employees), and we thought long and hard about what sort of uniform we wanted to have, that might look "decent" on each of us, give a professional appearance, and be comfortable enough to *want* to wear day in and day out. We settled on scrubs: we each have our own styles and colors, so it's not "cookie cutter" at all, but when we go to networking or marketing events as well as to work, there is no doubt that we are there to represent our business in as professional a manner as possible. We had our logo embroidered on them and are very happy with the results.

Scrubs here. They tend to stay looking pretty good, are easy to move in and in my opinion provide a subtle subconcious (? - maybe another word is better) nudge that mine is not a foo-foo practice. Not that I can't do foo-foo massage, but that it is not the mainstay of my business.

Over the years, I've worked in all sorts of clothing though.

I think the MT's wearing scrubs was something that started after people like chiropractors and other health care practitioners (dentists as a good example) started wearing scrubs in the late '80s and eraly '90's. Once that started happening, it just had a domino effect.

In my area, I know of very few places where the MTs wear scrubs. We do not permit scrubs because it wouldn't work with the rest of our business image. Our business has dress code standards but otherwise gives our MTs great latitude in presenting a professional image.

Would you care to elaborate on this, please, Jason? I am not implying that "anything other than scrubs is not professional", but I am curious what your employees wear instead?

Scrubs

Like anything else, an MT's attire needs to be consistent with their business model. It is a subtle piece of marketing that supports (or undermines) your brand.

We have an warm, beautiful, relaxing facility and an upscale business image; these are reflected in our advertising, decor, etc. In our area, scrubs are commonly worn at cold, plain, sterile medical offices - an association that is inconsistent with the image our business is designed to project.

Though we do a lot of "clinical" work, we do it in a place that is anything but clinical in atmosphere. Our dress code permits our MTs to dress in professionally appropriate slacks and shirts without logos or wording, and appropriate footwear. Most choose comfortable "business casual" attire that implies a sort of "relaxed professionalism", and it seems to work very well for us.

I work at a PT studio and it's all very sports related. Although most of my work is on chronic conditions. What I where to work is: black athletic shorts, my Harper's t-shirt (we get to choose our own shirts and then they just embroider them) and black Vibram fivefingers.

They are interesting looking - do a lot of MT's wear those in your area - or is it considered more something that athletes wear?

Both places that I currently do work for have the MT's wear scrubs.
I have always thought they look a little bit sloppy (sorry that's just me ), and really do think that other clothing can look more professional. Even though I special order the XXS scrub sizes, the fit is still kindy baggy and boxy. I would prefer a more tailored look.
I am also an esthetician and I do have to say that a lot of the spa uniform tops on the market are beautiful. They are a little pricey $30-$90, but wash and wear very well and fit well yet allow easy movement. I think dress certainly HAS to fit in with the over-all theme...the environment and image that you intend to project.
As long as clothing is not faded, ill-fitting or wrinkled, I think that your dress code sounds very appropriate...and it's nice that you give your staff some latitude.

The fivefingers are just becoming better known here in Aus. I own 2 pairs and I love them, it's just like working barefoot except with fully covered toes (required by legislation).

Also, I gets hot in my room so the shorts are great. I pretty much have the same dress code as the trainers, which is basically whatever is comfortable and sports the Harper's logo.
