Gerbils, and similar rodents, aren't really suitable for use in a server
environment due to their need to chew things. If rodents have to be used, I
recommend using rats, as being smarter they can be trained not to chew
important things - they are, however, also less happy about performing the
mindless repetitive tasks necessary. Similar issues with reluctance to
perform can be encountered when using alternative options, such as small
dogs. Cats are even worse, you can never get them to do anything.
I believe upgrading the gerbil infrastructure to one based on small monkeys
would offer the best solution - they don't tend to chew on anything, they're
smart, but can be pushed into a state of mild depression where they will
simply perform their tasks without thinking about it too much. They'll also
work for peanuts.
