Setting up a Reflexology Business

Sorry if this is in the wrong place as i'm new to this site, but i wonder if anyone can give
advice on becoming a moblile Reflexologist.
I qualified but never did anything with it and now would like to set myself up as a small business. Is it worth advertising to see what response i get before telling the tax man?
Or should i do this from the start?
Who do i inform?
Any help greatly appreciated,

Thanks for posting this, I had been thinking about the same thing. I am newly qualified and waiting for my certificate to come through.

I was wondering at which stage do you tell the taxman and officially set up in business. If, when you're first starting out and gradually building up your client base, you only get, say, 1 client a week would this be enough to be classed as officially running a business.

It would be interesting to see what others have experienced who have gone through this process.

Hi Sebenny and Snowbears

Like you I am quite newly qualified, I found a room in our local fitness centre on a Saturday morning but I have also been mobile as well. I started in January, I still have my, lets say, "normal jobs" and this is something I am trying to build up. I let the tax office know straight away, in fact I have my first return to fill in,which someone is going to help me with. I'm afraid not alot to fill in as things have been really slow to take off. You can be exempt from National Insurance if you feel that you are going to have a low income to start with. So I have applied and got an exemption.

I have tried advertising in local publication and Parish magazines without much success and most other Practitioners I have spoken to say it may take up to a year to get established. I also tried an Open Day, giving taster treatments, this was more successful and was a way of getting known.

As this is something I love doing I am not going to give up but keep plodding on. I am going round to hairdresser and the like in our small towns and villages this week to see if anyone will let me leave some of my leaflets. I have to say some people ahve been really helpful.

hi all

You can register with the tax man straight away if you like but you have 3 months from the day you start working to inform them. So snowbears, you could advertise first and see how things go.

Remember that you must keep a record allthe money that you earn from treatments,even if its just one and also keep any receipts of stuff that you have bought in relation to your business (including petrol if you are mobile)as this is tax deductable.
