Sewing newbie... What is a ZigZag?

This should tell you how very little I know about sewing... :) Someone at work is selling a ZigZag sewing machine. Thats all it says... Obviously I'd like to ask him more details, but I don't know ANYTHING about sewing. But I'd like to learn. So, first of all, what does "zig zag" mean? Do all machines do straight stitches too? What questions should I ask about the machine before I buy it? It says "seldom-used, $30". I'd like to make blankets, pillows, curtians, dog outfits :), and hem things.
