SAN MATEO (KRON) — San Mateo police have arrested a man who posed as a masseuse and sexually assaulted a woman during a massage. On Monday, April 13th San Mateo police received a report from a 43-year-old woman that she was allegedly sexually assaulted by a massage therapist.
The victim said that she went to a salon located on N. Kingston Street in San Mateo and went into a private massage room with a male who claimed to be a masseuse.
The victim undressed down to her undergarments and laid on the massage table when the male began touching her breasts inappropriately. The man then kissed her breasts, despite the victim urging him repeatedly to stop. The suspect then tried to take off the woman’s underwear, but was interrupted when a female staff member entered the room. The victim left the business immediately and called police.
Detectives immediately went to the scene and identified the suspect as 53-year-old Troy Murphy of San Jose, the owner of the nail salon, and later arrested him. Detectives learned that Murphy is a registered sex offender and is not a licensed masseuse.
According to police, “SMPD was not made aware of his employment at the business because there is no lawful requirement for either he or the registering agency to notify the jurisdiction in which a sex offender is employed.”
Murphy remains in custody at San Mateo Jail on charges of sexual battery and attempted oral copulation. Friday, Murphy pleaded not guilty to the felony count of sexual battery.
He will be back in court Tuesday.
According to police, a subsequent investigation revealed that the business in question is not licensed or permitted to offer massage and it is licensed only as a hair and nail salon.
