There are two types of breaches in trust. One is the accidental kind. The other is wilful, and the kind that should be publicly posted.
An example of the accidental kind is where we might share the total cost of services with a provider (one that we've known for a very long time). The other member then posts a review 2 months later with their experience, and cost, but also mentions that some clients may be getting same service for $xxx, which turns out to be $80 less than the current total fees. The provider may only have two clients at that old rate, and is pissed off at this information going public. The reviewer made an error but they did not realize the consequences.
The wilful ones are to be avoided. Just because a poster has been around a long time does not mean anything. They may have specific affiliations. Or they maybe playing the white knight (CAF style. Or they want to damage some businesses, and promote another. Best advice is to build the PM rapports over a long period of time. Go slow, and over several years you may have a small handful of trusted contacts. The ones who respect one on one confidentiality. They don't distribute privately shared information. As for people who just pm from out of the blue asking for details, I rarely respond. People need to offer some value in exchange, not just information that they gathered from 2 year old threads.
Yes pm is a very valuable tool, but go slow, and use over time to establish creds.
