I was wondering how you claim laundry on your taxes. Do you actually figure out how much power/water you use? I was thinking that I would "charge" the amount it would cost to do them at the laundramat--does that work??

Hi Lanie-I don't think the IRS is going to go for the laundramat estimate.  If you want a write-off like that you better go to the laundramat.  They like proof.  I write off my laundry detergent and softener...I buy a separate bottle for "work laundry" and save my receipts.  I think there is a way to log the amount of water used from your water meter and figure out the rate but I just can't be bothered with that.  I use my hands and not my head...and numbers make my head hurt.

I was afraid of that....I'll have to remember to get 'work' detergent and dryer sheets this year.If only I could just massage people and not worrry about the 'business' of it all....

Hey guys, when I was in school, the woman that taught the business development part of our classes used to work for the IRS.  She was one of those rabid types that was picky about everything.  Photocopied the fronts (and BACKS) of all her checks before depositing!!   She suggested going to the laundromat and doing a couple loads of sheets and seeing what it cost and then prorating it out and using that to figure out your deduction for the end of the year taxes.  I think that she figured hers out to be $1.00 per load to wash and dry.  So, maybe that will work.  Sorry, I don't know where to tell you to look in the IRS publications.  Darn, I hate the end of the year stuff.  Wish I was more organized.  Lisa

I have my taxes done every year and was told by my accountant (former IRS agent) that there is a formula for how much it cost to do a load of wash.   The other way to do it was to write off all your actual cost (detergant, fabric softners, etc) but with that you could not write off water and electricity.  I did that for years but found for the time I save and the cost difference that it was easier and cheaper for me to have my sheets done by the laundry.  Plus I can write off the trip from my office to the laundry (of course the laundry is two blocks from home....)  I as I always say when in doubt ask the pro's.

Big Dog --Do you just have them "laundered" or something special?  What exactly do you ask for?I know these questions sound a little goofy, but I never take anything to a cleaners, and since it sounds like what you are talking about, if you can give me a little more info that would be fantastic!  I have a cleaners two blocks from the office.Also, about how many sheets do you drop off at a time and what is the approximate cost, if you have time to figure that out?And lastly, do they FOLD?!!!!!!!Thanks in advance!  ;D

i used wash, dry, and fold service for about a year. very convenient and you get a receipt for every 'batch' you do.i stopped using the service when i found bleach stains on my big fluffy towels and they did not want to take responsibility for it.

Texas-Gal,   I take them to the local laundrymat, and drop them off.  Like the others have said they wash, dry, and fold them.  I currently pay about 1 a pound.  I usually drop off about 80 sets a week (I have a clinic with multiply therapist) and it cost me about $65 a week.  I drop them off in the evening and pick them up the next morning on the way into the office.  All of them are folding and in matching sets.

Here it costs $1.25 per pound with a 7 pound minimum and as everyone has stated, yes they fold em too!  WooHoo!  I take my sheets to the laundromat but unfortunately I am the one washing them.  As for writing them off, I won't really have any "proof" because you don't get any receipts.  Oh well, guess I'll have to talk to the accountant about that one.

WOW, $1.25 a pound!  At the laundromats near my home, it is anywhere from $0.59 to $0.89 a pound.

Thanks for all the replies on the laundro-mat.  I'll check ours as soon as I get a chance.  I just need to have enough extra sheets in case one day they don't get them done!
