Here is your Monday update: Mexican troops and federal police took over a lawless city on the U.S. border on Monday to curb a drug war that has spiraled out of control, killing dozens and setting off an armed clash between police. Troops in Humvee vehicles roared through the streets and federal police surrounded the town hall on Monday morning, taking dozens of local police away in trucks.

"It is a city without law," resident Blasa Lopez said. Order collapsed last week when suspected drug hitmen killed the town's police chief Alejandro Dominguez in a hail of 30 bullets only hours after he had been sworn into the post. On Saturday, 40 municipal police ambushed federal agents sent from Mexico City to investigate the killing.

President Vicente Fox's government accused local cops of being in the pay of drug traffickers. "There are very clear signs of a relationship between elements of the Nuevo Laredo police and drug smuggling, hence the decisive action," government spokesman Ruben Aguilar told journalists in the capital.

Joe Driver - Oh yes! The 41 got to fly in 3 private jets down to Mexico City for discussions. In my interpretation of the EL Manana from this morning and La Tarde, it appears a total of 200 federal police kept all of the local police in their cages (stations) through Sunday.

The Laredo Morning Times has been giving their usual excellent coverage, generally the day after the Mexico side. I hope they (the government) can do some things to actually make a difference this time.

Well, on Saturday, June 11, there was a shoot out between Federal police, and city police in Nuevo Laredo. One federal police officer was killed in the shootout. 41 city cops were detained by federal police, and reportedly being taken to Mexico City, amid protest from family members of the city police. City police claimed they didn't know the federal police were police, because the federal police weren't wearing uniforms. Many citizens of Nuevo Laredo are claiming the city police are corrupt, and involved with the gangs in Nuevo Laredo that fight each other over control of territory related to the drug business. The citizens in NL are losing confidence in the NL city police. Federal police were sent to the city in the wake of the killing of the new NL police chief on Wednesday, June 8th. This is more bad publicity for NL, further hindering their tourist industry. There have been 60 homicides in NL this year, many of them gang related, in the battle over drug territory.
